Where are those friends who pulled no punches
Shock from my hip with one another
We got so far from them
We're miles from way back when
I'm so nervous saying this out loud
As the words roll off my tongue and out my mouth
I can see a change
I can see a change in you
I see it coursing through your veins
And it is a shame
It is a shame on you
I barely recognize your face
And I don't like what I'm seeing lately
Oh I don't like who I'm seeing lately oh
So many seasons fell beneath us
Too many voices on our shoulders
I miss us dancing through the same noise
But here we are my friend
We're miles from way back when
I never knew that I could be slowed down, oh oh
I never knew that I could be slowed down until I told you
I can see a change
I can see a change in you
I see it coursing through your veins
And it is a shame
Oh it is a shame oh you
I barely recognize your face
And I don't like what I'm seeing lately oh
I don't like who I'm seeing lately oh
Lately I'm living in the past
Who am I to judge
I'm the worst of all
Some things are better left unsaid
But I miss the person I knew before
And I can see a change
I can see a change in you
I see it coursing through your veins
And it is a shame
Oh it is a shame oh you
I barely recognize your face
And I don't like what I'm seeing lately oh
I don't like who I'm seeing lately oh
I don't know who I'm seeing lately oh
I don't know who I'm seeing lately oh
The lyrics to Bastille's song "Shame" explore the deterioration of a relationship between two people. The singer reflects on the distance that has grown between them, symbolized by the line "We're miles from way back when." The absence of love between them is evident, and the singer wonders where their once close friends have gone. The references to shocking each other with words and feeling nervous about speaking their concerns out loud suggest that their communication has become strained.
The lyrics also depict a change in the person that the singer once knew. There is a sense of disappointment and sadness as the singer barely recognizes their face and dislikes what they're seeing lately. The chorus emphasizes this change, with the singer observing this transformation coursing through their veins. It is seen as a shame, highlighting the sadness and regret surrounding the situation.
As the song continues, the singer reflects on the past and how they miss the connection they once had. They acknowledge their own flaws and recognize that some things are better left unsaid. However, the longing for the person they knew before remains, and the singer is left confused and uncertain about who they are seeing now.
Overall, the lyrics of "Shame" delve into the struggle of witnessing someone change and drift away in a relationship. It explores the emotions of disappointment, regret, and longing for the past connection that has been lost.
