The Silence
Bastille Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you're proud to call your own
Speak in words you picked up
As you walked through life alone.
We used to swim in your stories
And be pulled down by their tide,
Choking on the words
And drowning with no air inside.
Now you've hit a wall and it's not your fault
My dear, my dear, my dear.
Now you've hit a wall and you've hit it hard,
My dear, my dear, oh dear.
It is not enough to be dumbstruck;
(Can you fill the silence?)
You must have the words in that head of yours.
And oh, oh, can you feel the silence?
I can't take it anymore,
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck.
(Can you fill the silence?)
Tell me a piece of your history
That you've never said out loud.
Pull the rug beneath my feet
And shake me to the ground.
Wrap me around your fingers,
Break the silence open wide,
Before it seeps into my ears,
And fills me up from the inside.
Now you've hit a wall and you're lost for words,
My dear, my dear, my dear.
Now you've hit a wall and you hit it hard
My dear, my dear, oh dear.
It is not enough to be dumbstruck;
(Can you fill this silence?)
You must have the words in that head of yours.
And oh, oh, can you feel the silence?
I can't take it anymore,
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck.
(Can you fill the silence?)
If you give it a name, then it's already won.
What you good for, what you good for?
If you give it a name, then it's already won.
What you good for, what you good for?
If you give it a name, then it's already won.
What you good for, what you good for?
If you give it a name, then it's already won.
What you good for, what you good for?
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck;
(Can you fill this silence?)
You must have the words in that head of yours.
And oh, oh, can you feel the silence?
I can't take it anymore,
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck, oh.
In Bastille's song The Silence, the lyrics encourage someone to share a part of their personal history that they are proud of, something they have never said out loud before. The song suggests that speaking these words out loud can be a way to break through a wall and take control of one's own life story. The song urges the listener to embrace their own experiences and confront the silence that can sometimes lead to feeling lost and helpless.
The first verse of the song describes how the listener's stories were once an important part of the singer's life, but they now find themselves struggling to break through the silence of their own struggles. The second verse pleads with the listener to speak up and share their experiences before they drown in silence. The repetition of the chorus is a reminder that it's not enough to simply feel devoid of words and hope that things will get better. Ultimately, the song is about taking ownership of one's life story and ultimately finding ways to break through the silence and take control of one's own narrative.
In terms of interesting facts about the song, we know that it was released on the second studio album of the British band Bastille, called "Wild World" in 2016. Tell me a piece of your history
Share with me a part of your past
That you're proud to call your own
That fills you with a sense of accomplishment
Speak in words you picked up
Share with me your experiences in your own terms
As you walked through life alone.
As you faced your struggles on your own
We used to swim in your stories
We used to enjoy your tales
And be pulled down by their tide,
And be engrossed in their depth
Choking on the words
Feeling weighed down by emotions
And drowning with no air inside.
Feeling suffocated by bottled up feelings
Now you've hit a wall and it's not your fault
You've encountered a roadblock that wasn't caused by you
My dear, my dear, my dear.
My beloved, my beloved, my beloved
Now you've hit a wall and you've hit it hard,
You're facing a tough challenge
It is not enough to be dumbstruck;
Silence will not suffice
(Can you fill the silence?)
Can you express yourself?
You must have the words in that head of yours.
You must find a way to articulate your thoughts
And oh, oh, can you feel the silence?
Can you sense the weight of unsaid words?
I can't take it anymore,
It's too much for me to bear
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck.
Silence is not enough
(Can you fill the silence?)
Can you find the words to express what's inside of you?
Tell me a piece of your history
Share something about your past
That you've never said out loud.
That you've always kept inside
Pull the rug beneath my feet
Challenge me with something unexpected
And shake me to the ground.
Overwhelm me with emotion
Wrap me around your fingers,
Entrance me with your words
Break the silence open wide,
Express yourself without restraint
Before it seeps into my ears,
Before I become overwhelmed by the weight of unsaid words
And fills me up from the inside.
And the silence becomes unbearable
Now you've hit a wall and you're lost for words,
You're at a loss for how to express yourself
My dear, my dear, my dear.
My beloved, my beloved, my beloved
If you give it a name, then it's already won.
If you face your challenge head-on, you will overcome it.
What you good for, what you good for?
What can you contribute?
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck;
Silence is not the answer
(Can you fill this silence?)
Can you find a way to express yourself?
You must have the words in that head of yours.
You need to be able to articulate your thoughts
And oh, oh, can you feel the silence?
Do you understand the gravity of the unsaid words
I can't take it anymore,
It's too heavy a burden
'Cause it is not enough to be dumbstruck, oh.
Silence is not enough
