Master of Illusion
Battle Beast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yeah

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Who's the greatest of them all?
I'm the master of illusion
Welcome to my mad delusion
I'm the one who makes the rules
For the heroes and the fools
I can tear down angels from the sky
And make Mona Lisa cry

Oh
You can hear the weeping violins
Long before the bitter end begins
Oh
You can see the strings and puppeteer
Before the dusk will make them disappear

The game is over (the game is over)
No more rounds to play, it's time to pay
Who's got the joker?
The game is over
Who's got the joker
To kill the lies and make your heart recall
There's no other sky to fall

Oh oh
Oh yeah

The dominoes of greed
Are falling for your endless needs
You're the master of illusion
Lost in your sad delusion
Every time you roll the dice
We're the ones who pay the price
While the oceans boil for your games
You just feed the flames

Oh
You can hear the weeping violins
Long before the bitter end begins
Oh
You can see the strings and puppeteer
Before the dusk will make them disappear

The game is over (the game is over)
No more rounds to play, it's time to pay
Who's got the joker?
The game is over
Who's got the joker
To kill the lies and make your heart recall
There's no other sky to fall

Oh and you will ask
"Which one am I? Am I dead or still alive?"
Reflections of the real fade
The stranger in the mirror remains
Can you hear the weeping violins
And cut the strings before the end begins?

The game is over (the game is over)
No more rounds to play, it's time to pay
Who's got the joker?
The game is over
Who's got the joker?

We are the ones, we hold the cards (we hold the cards)
There's no other sky to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Master of Illusion" by Battle Beast are about the danger of being a master manipulator and the downfall that comes with it. The song starts with the singer identifying themselves as the master of illusion, the one who controls heroes and fools alike. They claim that they have the power to tear down angels from the sky and make Mona Lisa cry. As the song progresses, the lyrics become more ominous, describing the weeping violins that signal the end of a game that has gone on too long. The chorus repeats, asking who holds the joker, who will kill the lies and make hearts recall that there's no other sky to fall.

The second verse takes on a more accusatory tone, with the singer addressing the listener directly. They state that every time the listener rolls the dice, the rest of us pay the price. The oceans are boiling for their game, but they just keep feeding the flames. The bridge brings up the idea of reflection and asks the question: "Which one am I? Am I dead or still alive?" Finally, the song ends with the reiterated chorus of holding the cards and there being no other sky to fall.

Overall, the song is a commentary on how those who manipulate others ultimately end up trapped by their own illusions. If you play with fire, you will eventually get burned.

Depends on what you look at.
For example the music videos of metal bands are still absolutely garbage in 99% of the cases, while typical US artists created and still create incredibly artistic videos that sometimes even are like entire movies.
Take Micheal Jacksons musicvideos as one high profile example, which might sound unfair at first, but there are many more even smaller artists that do far better music videos to really good music.
Thats one area where european metal can improve drastically.

The rest is, well, taste.

Except you want to go the "music in my generation"-route, then i recommend to take a look at Joji known as FilthyFrank and his "born in the wrong generation" video.
Dont fall into that trap. Letting people know that you have a good taste in music which is by your own standards, is just another way of placing yourself as better than others using a subjective understanding of quality.

@A B Agreed. I'm from NYC.
Alternative and pop was nice in the 1980's but I naturally gravitated to metal.

I've been a Metal fan since 1980's. Was listening in college to Classical music, metal ballads, Metal Church, Savatage, Scorpions, Metallica, Iron Maiden, then found Yngwie Malmsteen. Moved on to Nightwish, Tarja, Delain, Within Temptation, and Dragonforce, and now symphonic metal. It's been a long journey, but well worth it.

America no longer is into metal and their modern music is, but I still am.
So it's nice to hear Europe leading the metal way.
