MIAMI
Baxter Dury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to Miami now
Broken promises are here
I don't know, you don't know
Welcome to Miami now

I don't think you realize how successful I am
I'm like a shipping tycoon
Full of promise and cum
I'm a salamander, short riff lover boy
Causing grief for the bleeding eyes
I'm the turgid fucked up lil' goat pissing on your fucking hill
And you can't ship me out
'Cause you can't catch me
'Cause you're so fat
So fuck ya
I'm Miami

Welcome to Miami now
Broken promises are here
I don't know you don't know
Welcome to Miami now

I don't think you know who I am
I'm the sausage man
The shadow licker
I'm the tiny little ghost
That features in your despondent moments
The timeless whisper
The glassy dude
I'm the science of all that's wrong
And I'm making you think that you doubt everything you love
But I'm here to stay
I'm Miami

Welcome to Miami now
Broken promises are here
I don't know you don't know
Welcome to Miami now

I'm the great sleeper
I'm the bookkeeper
I'm the vicar
I'm the main cause
I'm Morgan Freeman
I cut master of Neon Angels
I'm the night chef
The eye doctor
Mister Maserati
I'm king of the migraines
Soiled lord of tears
I'm the urban ghost
I'm a river of dead fish
I'm Miami

Welcome to Miami now
Broken promises are here

I don't know you don't know
Welcome to Miami now

Overall Meaning

Baxter Dury's song Miami is a dark and moody track that could be interpreted in several ways, but at its core, it talks about the city of Miami and the sense of broken promises and disillusionment that comes with it. The chorus repeats the phrase "Welcome to Miami now, broken promises are here" which sets the tone for the rest of the song. The lyrics are enigmatic and abstract, with a lot of non-sequiturs and imagery that is both sinister and surreal.

It could be argued that the song is a commentary on the superficiality and decadence of Miami—the city of sun, sea, and glamour. The first verse seems to depict someone trying to impress others with their wealth and status, while the second verse talks about someone who is the opposite: a "sausage man" and a "tiny little ghost" who haunts people in moments of despair. The third verse takes on different personas, implying that the city of Miami is many things at once: a sleeper, a bookkeeper, a river of dead fish, and so on.

Overall, Baxter Dury's Miami is a bleak and cynical take on a city that is often seen as a paradise. It suggests that there is a lot of darkness and disappointment lurking beneath the surface, and that the city can't escape the "broken promises" that pervade it.

First time I've ever listened to Baxter Dury, didn't know what to expect but this video just blew my fucking mind. Definitely the freshest thing I've heard since finding Sleaford Mods, of whom I'm a massive fan. Wack It Up Bruv's nod to the originator lead me here, and I ain't disappointed!! Didn't think I'd find another artist/group quite on their wavelength but this is just brilliant on so many levels!

@MrMatador29

I am a massive fan of Baxter's dad, but Baxter is total class too. Discovered him just this week. So cool. 😎

@emmacogley

Same. Ian’s music was incredible :)

@TheDinosaur08

I was listening to Baxter a few years ago and the only songs I've heard from Ian were Sex&Drugs and Hit me (when I was a kid) , so I listened to "New boots and panties" and Oh boy ! such a great reccord. I'm a french listener and when I understood the lyrics I thought they were funny and sexy and also poetic. Ian and Baxter reminds me of Gainsbourg in a certain kind of way.

@gabemccloud4520

same here! my dad was a child of the 70's so it was kind of compulsory for me to be a second generation ian dury fan. you can definitely hear some of ian dury in Baxter, but id like to think that baxter has his own unique sound that im actually a huge fan of. Keep it up baxter!
