To Music
Bay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The rain on your head
Has seen better days
And I feel inclined
To write what you say
But stay calm
For the both of us and the rest of us at home
I don't want to be
The person I assume other people to be
No, that's not for me
Is there anywhere other
Than where I've been
If not I'd like to go there again
But stay close
For the both of us this really isn't close
I don't want to be
The person I assume other people to be
No, that's not for me
I don't want to be

The person I assume other people to be
No, that's not for me

Overall Meaning

In Bay's song "To Music," the rain serves as a metaphor for the challenges and difficulties one may face in life. The line "the rain on your head has seen better days" is a reference to the fact that we all experience struggles and hardships, but it's important to acknowledge that these things don't define us. Bay feels compelled to write down what the rain is saying, perhaps alluding to the idea that he finds inspiration in difficult times. He then urges himself and those around him to remain calm and not succumb to negative emotions.

The following lines, "I don't want to be the person I assume other people to be, no that's not for me," suggest that Bay is striving to be true to himself and not compare himself to others. He's acknowledging that he may have preconceived notions or expectations of how he should be based on societal norms, but he wants to break free from those and live authentically. He then asks if there's anywhere else he can go, implying that he may feel stuck or stagnant where he is currently. Despite this, he reassures himself and those around him to stay together and remain strong.

Overall, "To Music" is a song about resilience, authenticity, and connection. Bay encourages listeners to embrace their struggles and challenges, to stay true to themselves, and to rely on the support of those around them as they navigate through difficult times.

Man… I’ve been from a while back and I’ve gone through enormous changes

I’m 2009, at the age of 18, living in Sacramento, I found your music. Along with the hyphy legends of course. My favorite Bay Area rapper, Andre Nickatina.

At that time I was doing blow every day — ecstasy, booze, and throw in some hallucinations. I was an atheist, I was nihilistic and my life was entirely about how to feel good.

Bouncing from woman to woman, I was ensconced in the drug scene. The hyphy music was my theme. Take trips out the SF and get smashed.

Now I’m 34 years old. I’m married with one child and one on the way. Haven’t touched a drug/booze in 8 years. I went from a radical liberally, fighting for gay rights, to a staunch Christian republican.

And when the E40 song came up on my feed, “say less”

Props E40. Keep that grind. Legends often die too soon, but you’re keeping that shh rolling
