Captive Cows
Bay Faction Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That sound that sound
My favorite sound
Why do you switch?
To english frowns
I crumbled like old coffee grounds
When I tried to break into your house
When I smell blood, oh oh You should go now
Before the wolves come back to pound the jesus from the ceiling grout
you should go now
before the mayor accepts his crown
and runs into the ground
I'll take you out on the town
We'll make curly q's on captive cows
But you fell apart like old coffee grounds
When I brought you back to my house
When I smell blood, oh oh You should go now
Before the wolves come back to pound the Jesus from the ceiling grout
You should go now
Before the mayor accepts his crown
And runs into the ground
You should go now
Before the wolves come back to pound the Jesus from the ceiling grout
You should go now

Before the mayor accepts his crown
And runs into the ground

Overall Meaning

The song "Captive Cows" by Bay Faction is a melancholic piece that speaks about failed attempts to connect with someone. The first stanza reveals the singer's attraction and attachment to a particular sound which he/she adores. However, things change, and the subject switches to something negative, English frowns, which the singer dislikes. The song progresses to narrate a failed relationship as the singer tried to break into someone's house, only to crumble like old coffee grounds. The second stanza uses metaphorical language, comparing the wolves to people who destroy the things they love, and the Jesus in the ceiling grout as a symbol of hope being destroyed. The singer advises the subject to leave before the wolves return to cause more damage.

The chorus repeats twice, with the singer urging the subject to leave before the mayor ruins everything. They talk of going out and having fun, but the subject falls apart like old coffee grounds, and they cannot connect. The last line of the chorus reiterates that the subject should leave before things become worse. The song is melancholic and sad as the singer expresses his/her inability to connect with someone he/she loves.

I’ve been lyin’ bout
Where I’ve been drinkin’
Dangerously distant
Am I losing you but..
In this age, you can’t feel peace.

Loose cannoning atrophy
Only twenty-odd months
To twenty-three
If I wanted to swim would you hold my leash?

You’re so much
older does it feel weird?
Having me over when you get so drunk
you can’t fuck, you won’t let me go

So what rot your teeth out drinkin’ on the quad
I can smell it but I won’t say shit keep quiet
I’ll go home

Young heart full of blood
everybody smokes but not that much
we hung out all night but didn’t touch once ‘cuz
In this age you can’t feel peace

Loose cannoning atrophy
Only twenty-odd months
To twenty-three
If I wanted to swim would you hold my leash?

You’re so much
older does it feel weird?
Having me over when you get so drunk
you can’t fuck, you won’t let me go

So what rot your teeth out drinkin’ on the quad
I can smell it but I won’t say shit keep quiet
I’ll go home

James does this thing where he stretches out vowel sounds, bearing that in mind I think this is the most accurate transcription out there.

I just heard the insta live version of this. I really wonder how long this song was in the making for and why its just lost in time now. From the live version sounds like James was touching up alotta of things heavily :(

(Idk if links work but heres the ig live: https://youtu.be/1hy_DsV1mZo)

@gabe I really liked this version of older !! I can only wonder why it didnt make it in flordia guilt. I also feel the same way about them breaking up. It was so strange seeing them go silent on their socials and then disbanding. I was so suprised. Im really glad though that theres people who really saw something special in these guys like I did :)

good find !! i like that version a lot, takes on a totally different mood but still delivers the same message :’) i feel like bay fac disbanded way sooner than any of them actually planned/wanted to — they removed their self titled from streaming services, leading fans to believe they were going to put out a lot more music that differed from that genre, only to call it quits shortly after releasing Swan Dive. it’s pretty strange

@Austin Uecker love how that sounds, thanks a bunch ^^

Another part I think you may have made a mistake on is at “you’re so much older, does it feel weird having me over” instead of “it’ll be” I could be wrong though

gabe

@airdanimals that’s what makes sense right ? i just don’t really hear him making an E sound at the end of the word he’s saying, more of a D sound which is why i put hold! i’m sure you could be right though!!

airdanimals

also! i think the lyric might be "I'll go home" and not "I'll go hold"!
