Don't Talk
Beach Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can hear so much in your sighs
And I can see so much in your eyes
There are words we both could say
But don't talk, put your head on my shoulder

Come close, close your eyes and be still
Don't talk, take my hand and let me hear your heart beat
Being here with you feels so right
We could live forever tonight
Lets not think about tomorrow
And don't talk put your head on my shoulder

Come close, close your eyes and be still
Don't talk, take my hand and listen to my heart beat
Listen, listen, listen.

Don't talk, put your head on my shoulder
Don't talk, close your eyes and be still
Don't talk, put your head on my shoulder

Don't talk, close your eyes and be still
Don't talk, put your head on my shoulder

Overall Meaning

The Beach Boys' song "Don't Talk" is a classic example of a love song that speaks to the power of physical proximity and emotional intimacy. The lyrics of the song suggest that there are times when words simply can't express the depth of feeling that exists between two people, and that sometimes it's better to simply be close and silent than to try to articulate everything that's going on inside.

The opening lines of the song set the tone for this sentiment, as the singer notes that there is so much he can hear and see in his lover's eyes and sighs. Instead of trying to verbalize those feelings, however, he encourages his partner to put her head on his shoulder and be still. This physical closeness is a way of communicating that can be even more powerful than words, as it allows them to truly listen to each other's heartbeats and feel the warmth of each other's bodies.

Throughout the song, the refrain of "don't talk" is repeated as a way of emphasizing the importance of this physical intimacy. The idea seems to be that words only create distance and have the potential to ruin the magic of the moment, so it's better to simply let the emotions flow and focus on the physical experience of being together. The song ends with a final exhortation to "put your head on my shoulder," emphasizing once again the importance of this physical connection.

Overall, "Don't Talk" is a beautiful expression of the power of physical intimacy in relationships, and a reminder that sometimes words simply can't capture everything that we want to express.

Robert Powell i still have my grandma who has severe mixed dementia. she don't know how to speak anymore, only 3 or 4 words. she is the person i love most out of all the ones i care about, and it really pains me seeing her like this, especially knowing what kind of person she was.

This is, in my opinion, the most beautiful song Brian Wilson ever composed. This whole album is a miracle.
