Formed in 2009, the act was originally a means to expand the solo project of Dustin Payseur. That same year bassist John Peña and guitarist Christopher Burke were recruited as the lineup for their initial tour. Their debut single, Daydream / Desert Sand was released in February 2010 on Captured Tracks. In May 2010, their debut album Beach Fossilswas released and met with favorable reviews.
The following years saw a number of changes to their lineup, including when John Peña left the band in 2011 to form Heavenly Beat, and guitarist Cole Smith, who left for his solo project, DIIV. In 2012, Tommy Gardner stepped in as the drummer to form their current lineup.
Clash the Truth was released in early 2013, peaking at number 40 on the Independent Albums chart. Paysuer described it as being an album about what happens after you've solved the immediate problems that come with moving away from home - "something that just doesn't feel like it makes sense yet".
In 2017, after a long break, the third album Somersault was released

I turn to you and I can face it
Us head first into the depths unseen
Lets me know that it's alright
Face it
I turn to you and I can face it
Us as one headed to the darkness now
I'd give up the country life
I'd fall for you anytime
I'd give up the country life
I'd give up city life
I'd fall for you anytime
Anytime
Face it
You turn to me and you can face it
Us head first into the depths unseen
Let's you know that its alright
Face it
You turn to me and you can face it
Us as one head into the darkness now
Lets me know that I'm fine
I'd give up the country life
I'd fall for you anytime
I'd give up the country life
I'd give up city life
I'd fall for you anytime
Anytime
The lyrics to Beach Fossils' song "Face It" convey the idea of finding solace and comfort in a relationship. The singer is acknowledging the challenges and unknowns of life, but finds strength in the fact that they are facing them with their partner. The lyrics "face it, I turn to you and I can face it" and "face it, you turn to me and you can face it" emphasize the mutual support and reliance on each other. The lines "us head first into the depths unseen" and "us as one head into the darkness now" suggest that the journey is not an easy one, but the relationship provides the courage to face it.
There is a certain vulnerability in admitting that one needs someone else to face life's challenges. The repeated lines "lets me know that it's alright" and "lets me know that I'm fine" suggest that the relationship is a source of comfort and stability. The repeated refrain of "I'd give up the country life, I'd give up city life, I'd fall for you anytime" further emphasizes the importance of the relationship to the singer.
