Other People
Beach House攀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you thought it would happen
Good love goodbye
I know where no one can reach you
No I don't mind
It's your world why would you fake it
These days go by
As you turn around-ow-ow-ow
Other people want to keep in touch
Something happens and its not enough
Never thought that it would mean so much
Other people want to keep in touch

Heaven won't keep us together
Right place at the wrong time
It takes all kinds of weather
Distant new skies
Somewhere nothing could reach us
These days go by
As you turn around-ow-ow-ow

Other people want to keep in touch
Something happens and its not enough
Never thought that it would mean so much
Other people want to keep in touch

Was it ever quite enough
Was it ever quite enough
Was it ever quite enough

Was it ever quite enough
Was it ever quite enough

Overall Meaning

The song "Other People" by Beach House talks about the complexities of relationships and how they can sometimes feel unfulfilling, despite both parties wanting to make it work. It starts with the idea that one person thought things would work out between them and their partner, but good love ends up saying goodbye. The singer then admits that they know of a place where no one can reach their partner, but they aren't bothered as it's their partner's world and they won't fake it. The line "these days go by, as you turn around-ow-ow-ow" suggests that time is passing, but nothing seems to change and the partner isn't showing any signs of wanting to work on the relationship.

The chorus "Other people want to keep in touch, something happens, and it's not enough" reinforces the idea that both parties want to make the relationship work, but something is stopping them from achieving that. The line "never thought that it would mean so much" suggests that before this relationship, they didn't realize how much effort it takes to maintain one.

The second half of the song talks about how sometimes, despite all efforts, a relationship is still doomed to fail. The line "Heaven won't keep us together, right place, wrong time" suggests that the couple simply weren't meant to be together, and although they found themselves in the right place, the timing was wrong. The final lines, "Was it ever quite enough?" are rhetorical, implying that no matter how much effort is put into a relationship, it may never be quite enough.
