Real Love
Beach House Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I met you somewhere
In a hell beneath the stairs
There's someone in that room
That frightens you when they go boom
Boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom
Boom, boom, boom

The color you say is black is the one you might lack
In the size of your eyes, is there a righteous prize?

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh
I met you, I met you

Oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh

There's something wrong with our hearts
When they beat pure, they stand apart
In the black room, the light, watch the seabird fall
Real love, it finds you somewhere with your back to it

Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh, oh oh oh
I met you, I met you

Oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh, oh oh oh oh
Oh

We know, we know
We belong by the stream, into the dawn
We know, we know
We belong by the stream, into the dawn
We know, we know
We belong by the stream, into the dawn

We know, we know
We belong by the stream, into the dawn

Overall Meaning

The opening line of "Real Love" sets the tone for the entire song, "I met you somewhere in a hell beneath the stairs." Here, Beach House's lead singer Victoria Legrand metaphorically likens meeting her lover to descending into the depths of hell. This imagery continues throughout the piece with lines like "In the black room, the light, watch the seabird fall." This use of seemingly contradictory imagery serves to underscore the complexity of the singer's relationship. The lover both frightens her and draws her in.

The repetition of the phrase "We know, we know, we belong by the stream into the dawn" serves as a sort of mantra for the song. It's as if the couple is trying to convince themselves that they belong together despite the challenges they face. The lines "There's something wrong with our hearts, when they beat pure they stand apart" hint at a deeper sense of loneliness or isolation the couple may feel. Even when they are seemingly close or in love, there is something that separates them.

This was mine and my husbands first dance at our wedding. Still love to come back and listen to it.

That's beautiful! I always thought that this and Take Care would be good first dance songs, although I like the idea of walking down the aisle to Take Care.

I've been listening to this album for 13 years, and in the last week this song has hit me in ways it never has before. I cry every time I listen to it.

I can feel that energy from it too, feels good to know that there are strangers that felt the same thing I felt as soon as I heard it

It is absolutely amazing to me what a song can do to your brain. This is hands down one of my favorite songs of all time. I remember listening to this back in either 2010 or 11 and fell in love with it. I've never lost that feeling. It's so simple, yet so deep and her voice is so haunting and memorable. It brings back a certain feeling I will never relive, ever again. A feeling so specific to my youth while figuring out who I was.
