Gaeta's Lament
Bear McCreary Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man
With my three wishes clutched in her hand
The first that she be spared the pain
That comes from a dark and laughing rain
When she finds love may it always stay true
This I beg for the second wish I made too
But wish no more
My life you can take
To have her please just one day wake
To have her please just one day wake
To have her please just one day wake

Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man
With my three wishes clutched in her hand
The first that she be spared the pain
That comes from a dark and laughing rain
When she finds love may it always stay true
This I beg for the second wish I made too
But wish no more
My life you can take
To have her please just one day wake
To have her please just one day wake

To have her please just one day wake
To have her please just one day wake

Overall Meaning

Bear McCreary's "Gaeta's Lament" from the soundtrack of Battlestar Galactica is a deeply moving and sad song that captures the essence of intense longing and desperation. The lyrics are about a man who has lost the love of his life, and now she sleeps in his shirt, holding his three wishes in her hand. The first wish is for her to be spared from the pain that comes from a dark and laughing rain. The second wish is that when she finds love, it will always stay true. The third wish remains unspoken, but the man offers his life in exchange for just one day of her waking up and being with him again.

The lyrics are poignant and evocative, with each line expressing the depth of the man's love and devotion for his lost love. The song's slow, mournful melody enhances the sense of heartbreak and despair, as the man sings his plea to the universe to bring his love back to life. The repetition of the final line "To have her please just one day wake" emphasizes the futility of the man's wish and the inevitability of his loss.

Overall, "Gaeta's Lament" is a deeply moving piece of music that captures the raw emotions of love and loss. The lyrics convey the pain of missing someone deeply, and the melody evokes a sense of longing and despair that will resonate with anyone who has ever experienced heartbreak.

I sang at my wife's bedside the night she passed from complications of cancer. Almost 2 years gone now and I still tear up when I hear this.

I think the most tragic part of Gaeta's character is that his heart was in the right place. He truly thought he was doing the right thing for the colonies, but he was manipulated and misled by people with bad intentions.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Poor guy learned that the hard way.

Well said.

@@Radas1000 Man of principles? Did you forget about him having the quorum executed?
Although... I suppose if those were his principles all along then you are right.
I really do feel bad for Gaeta though; his reaction when he found out what Zarek did. BSG is some of the greatest TV ever produced hands down.

@erricred2

Rannoch I wish it wasn’t tainted by the old series. There’s such a stigma of nerdy sci fi surrounding it but it’s honestly just a beautiful drama on the human condition.

This song is a great example of how incredible Battlestar Galactica was. On what other shows do you see music like this?

Six years gone, and I still lament its passing...

@vlacocabios

+Stephanie L another great show with comparable music- Doctor Who. Murray Gold is excellent

@ThePandoraGuy
