I think the most tragic part of Gaeta's character is that his heart was in the right place. He truly thought he was doing the right thing for the colonies, but he was manipulated and misled by people with bad intentions.

If anything, Gaeta is the epitome of the tragic character in BSG. Initially, he's young and an idealist, but as the series progresses he gets darker and darker, feeling that the system he once was devoted to has completely let him down, and after New Caprica he can't take the injustice anymore. this feeling of betrayal accompanied by the loss of his leg move Gaeta to be sick of his decadent state and tries to do what he feels is the right thing to do--change the system. Only it doesn't work, and he pays the ultimate price for his idealism, albeit a darker idealiam from when we started

antred11 That was kind of the point at the end though. The survivors had done so much to survive, and it seemed like the universe just kept demanding more and more. Earth was a false hope, and now to survive they were forced to ally with the very beings who had put them through all of this. Gaeta, and many more, felt that this was just too much to bear.

A beautiful song that you never want to hear me sing.
If I'm singing this, it's for the same reason as Felix Gaeta: we're eyeballs deep in a "personal apocalypse" that'll probably leave us traumatized and the only thing we can do to cope is *sing*.

But it's more than that. The song is a spiral, not a loop: with every revolution - every repetition - we're moving toward something, changing states from A to We begin singing with barely a voice and nothing like steadiness. But every loop improves on that until we can sing it fully and steadily, and we can go from the soft and solemn first movement to the defiant, diligent, vigorous march of the second movement.

It's a song that means "I'm suffering more than you can imagine", but it's also a song that means "I will endure and I WILL stand again, even if the leg it's on is crippled or rebuilt."

This is true talent, Alessandro Juliani has an amazing voice. Without instruments (at least in the first part) he manages to sing beautifully and convey such strong emotion. That's the mark of a truly great singer imo, to be able to sing well without instruments (although instruments certainly add to the beauty and can highlight a beautiful voice!) and without autotune. God, what an amazing and talented man.

I liked how he was an antagonist though, bringing up the viewpoint of the "civilian" against the ever-present army, and was pointing out the incoherencies in president Roslin's reign more than mandate. But during the rebellion and the mutiny together with Gaeta at the end, I cared. I understood their partnership, I finally got Zarek's character.

Gaeta has the best arch in the show. He goes from being an incredibly loyal idealist on Galactica, doing what he thinks is right on New Caprica and then becoming gradually more and more embittered after the loss of his leg until he starts the revolution. Even as he's being shot he knows that he was never the villain.

Not exactly the same circumstances, but it reminds me of Pippin's song "The Edge of Night" during Faramir's ill-conceived charge that Denethor ordered him to make on Osgiliath in Return of the King. He saw and understand so much Adama and Tigh, and what was at stakes for the rest of humanity should their new Cylon allies deceive them. I love this song! I always felt he was directly singing about the Number 8 he fell in love with on New Caprica and then killed in The Face of the Enemy webisodes. Poor guy. In my opinion there were only three tragic characters on that show. Gaeta, Duahla, and Cally. Gaeta would have never revolted if Anders hadn't blown his leg off without even a slap on the wrist. I knew Cally wouldn't make it. Duahla depressed me though. She was always the one to convince others not to give up. Then she did :(

You want to know why this is the first track on the Season 4 soundtrack? Because Gaeta and Zarek's mutiny is the best story line from Season 4. Whether you agreed or didn't agree with Gaeta's decision in siding with Zarek, the show did such an amazing job of explaining his position and why he did what he did. And we all know there are people who supported and who opposed Gaeta and what he became in the end.

part 2: .. and then the wishlist writer realizes: "Screw the list! Basically the song is a bittersweet elegy, of course some motives are deeper than described here, but overall the song is about the purest love and how it is the most important thing in life.

See, I watched Firefly before BSG, and absolutely love it. It was my favorite show, sci-fi or otherwise, before BSG. But BSG, in my opinion, is better. While the characters of Firefly are incredible, they feel somewhat "written", whereas in BSG the characters just feel real, flaws and all. And BSG deals much more with themes and issues of life. Plus, Bear McCreary's music.

There are several interpretations you can take from this song. He might be singing about Kara Thrace, as she searches for the truth about her resurrection. He could be singing about Roslin as she leads humanity out of its long nightmare. He could be singing about the Hybrid, who is going through the pain of the Cylon conflict. Or he sings about his leg which he misses very much.

I think gaeta sings this about dee. The way he looks and acts around her makes me think he like her but was so scared to do anything. Now that she married apollo and he lost is leg it kinda fits with the lyrics. Love his voice, so powerful fro someone who isn't so powerful himself. Except maybe the episode the blood on the scales.

Around this time in the series, Gaeta's actually dating Hoshi. It's canon and shown in the webisodes "Face of The Enemy" (which also depicts his relationship with an Eight on New Caprica). Although it's really nice to have another (along with D'Anna) openly bi character in the series, it's really disappointing they would bury it in webisodes that probably only fans hungry for more will check out, and not in the main episodes seen by most of the usual audience.
Once you know this information, you can spot some looks exchanged between Hoshi and Gaeta in CIC (and Hoshi sometimes calling him "Felix", as opposed to "Mr Gaeta" like everyone else), but it's reaaally hidden. Less of Starbuck's and Lee's love lives and more of Gaeta's would have been welcome.

part 1: He sings about a woman, who is in deep sleep (very ill, coma or something similar). He sings in the name of her loved one, a man who wrote a "wishlist to God". From this point, he talks about these wishes which all can be applied to two worlds (real life and the current one she dreams or summoned). The wishes ask for a life without pain (physical, mental), that she'd truly be happy with someone standing next to her (loved one)...

Finally got done watching all Battlestar episodes. I really did love Bear McCreary's voice in the episode "guess what's coming to dinner." It's a shame to discover such a voice like this, when in the hospital with an amputated leg...by none other than a cylon.

If I ever suffer amnesia I'm relying on people like you fine folk to reintroduce me to this series and blow my mind one more time! And also, I don't feel sorry for Anders one bit for what happened to him. The second coup would never have ocurred in such a magnificent fashion if he hadn't shot Gaeta. Impulsive fool could've made his point without shooting poor Felix. Burn Anders, I hope that sun is comfortable.

I felt so conflicted while watching the mutiny episodes. I completely understand where Gaeta was coming from. He sacrificed so much for humanity but he was never recognized for his deeds and he was forced to work with the Cylons who destroyed the colonies in the first place. But on the other hand Adama is a goddam hero and was trying to forge a new path between man and machine. Damn now that's good television!

A deeply complex and ultimately tragic character. Personally, I believed that Gaeta's reasoning for the mutiny was solidly grounded by Adama's actions toward the Cylon rebels. These were the enemies who had destroyed their colonies (including the Six who had sabotaged their defense systems). It's not hard to imagine the rage and betrayal felt by the survivors. Gaeta's saving moment though was when he recognized the evil that Zarek had allowed to taint their cause, and ended it. Farewell, sir.

Hearing this song takes me back 10 years ago when I was in my Job Corps Dorm, just reading while listening to this song. God this takes me back to a simpler time.
