Save It For Later
Beat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two dozen other dirty lovers
Must be a sucker for it
Cry cry but I don't need my mother
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it

Sooner or later
Your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later
You hit the deck, you get found out
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
You let me down

Black air and seven seas are rotten through
But what can you do?
I don't know how I'm meant to act with all of you lot
Sometimes you don't try
Just now now now now now now now now now now now
Now now now now now now now now now now now

Sooner or later
Your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later
You hit the deck, you get found out
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
You let me down
You runaway, runaway and let me down

Two dozen other stupid reasons
Why we should suffer for this
Don't bother trying to explain them
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it

Sooner or later
Your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
Sooner or later
You hit the deck, you get found out
Save it for later
Don't run away and let me down
You let me down

You run away run away
Runaway runaway runaway, runaway, and let me down

Overall Meaning

The song “Save It For Later” by The English Beat tells the story of a person caught up in a complicated situation involving two dozen other lovers. The singer finds it difficult to make a decision about what to do, but knows that sooner or later, they will have to take action. The lyrics suggest that the singer is somewhat reliant on the support of their lover to guide them through this tough time, as they ask their partner to hold their hand while they come to a decision.

The chorus suggests that maybe the singer is already facing the consequences of their actions, or knows that they will be soon. “Save it for later, don’t run away and let me down” could be interpreted as a plea for their lover not to leave them when things get tough. The phrase “sooner or later, your legs give way, you hit the ground” is ominous and implies that the singer’s situation is not sustainable. The middle verse of the song seems to suggest that the singer is overwhelmed by the situation and doesn’t know how to behave around all of their lovers. The phrase “black air and seven seas are rotten through, but what can you do?” is cryptic and could symbolize the singer feeling trapped or powerless.

Overall, this song is a complex and layered commentary on the difficulties of navigating complex romantic situations. It’s also a great example of the ska revival sound that The English Beat helped popularize in the early 80s.

I'm 58 and every once in a while I'll tell a young person of in their 20's that I envy you age but not your music. I was living in Orange County and 30 minutes from KROQ in Pasadena before they got eaten up by "the corporations." What great music. Only the mid 60s surpasses the diversity and creativeness of the early & mid 80s.

The late-1970s is when it started here in the Los Angeles area. Small venues with punk, ska, reggae, metal, hard rock & roll; diversity was the key. You could call it a "rebellion" against the prog rock & vocalists that had taken over the radio airwaves.

Me two. We were so lucky.

@callen8908

KROQ was my go to station! What a great time for music. Solid talent looking forward to

@ellavaderknows

My daughter asked me to choose one song that most perfectly represents the sound and vibe of the 80's. This was it.
