Dear Prudence
Beatles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

Dear Prudence open up your eyes
Dear Prudence see the sunny skies
The wind is low the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence won't you open up your eyes?

Look around round
Look around round round
Look around

Dear Prudence let me see you smile
Dear Prudence like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain
So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence won't you let me see you smile?

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue

It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence won't you come out to play

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Dear Prudence by the Beatles encourage Prudence Farrow, the younger sister of Mia Farrow, to come out and enjoy the beauty of the world. Prudence Farrow had joined the Beatles in India during their stay at the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, where they were learning transcendental meditation. Prudence was particularly enamored with meditation and would often remain secluded in her room for long periods of time, meditating. John Lennon, who wrote the song, was concerned about her seclusion and wanted her to come out and enjoy the beauty of nature, which is reflected in the lyrics of the song.

The opening lines of the song - "Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play / Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day" - ask Prudence to leave her room and enjoy the new day. The sun has risen, the sky is blue, and everything is beautiful - but it is not enough if Prudence does not come out and enjoy it. The line "the wind is low the birds will sing / That you are part of everything" says that Prudence is part of the natural world, and she should experience it as such.

The repetition of the lines "Dear Prudence won't you come out to play / Dear Prudence greet the brand new day" throughout the song not only adds to the song's catchiness but also emphasizes the singer's plea to Prudence to come out of her room and enjoy life.
