God Knows
Beatsteaks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to Beatsteaks's song "God Knows" are open to interpretation, but one possible interpretation is that the singer is embracing a surreal, dreamlike state of being where everything feels right and they are free to be who they want to be. The first line, "My friend it feels right," sets the tone for a positive and adventurous mood. The singer mentions "ringing bright" and "more fun lights on," which could refer to a sensory overload or a heightened awareness of their surroundings. They also indicate that they don't want to be misunderstood by saying "don't you get me wrong." The singer then expresses a desire to escape their current reality and "slip into a bigger dream."
Later in the song, the singer references seeing a "real cat" that made them feel indescribable emotions. The cat may be a symbol for something that is both familiar and strange, or it could be a reference to the phrase "curiosity killed the cat." The singer acknowledges that they are "fucked up" and have a "broken back," but they are still willing to dance and be a role model despite their imperfections. They also offer to share their experiences with others who may need guidance. The line "God knows what we're doing here" suggests that the singer recognizes the mysteriousness and complexity of life, but they are willing to embrace it anyway.
