She Was Great
Beatsteaks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There goes all the magic
And that's alright
And it's her on the phone
Pretending everything is just tragic
Is just tragic
I've been counting the years
Trying to fuck my way
She was great
When she was great
She was great
When she was great
I remember the kick 1956
Was just magic and came undone
Watch him yearning for the throne
Back in '69 with a habit and that's alright
And it was alright
He was great
When he was great
She was great
When she was great
She was great
When she was great
She was great
When she was great
Sing it one more time, baby
Then again you got me wrong
'Cause you don't have to worry
What's on my mind
I've been staring at the clock
Waiting to be part of the magic
It was magic
I guess, at least I got a place
To be in between a shot and a dream
He was great
When he was great
She was great
When she was great
She was great
When she was great
She was great
When she was great
Come on, come on, come on
Ladies and gentlemen
Beatsteaks in the house
In the studio
I love it
I love it in full effect
Let the room be nice
We out!
The song "She Was Great" by Beatsteaks revolves around the themes of nostalgia, regret, and longing. The opening lines, "A lot of tears, a lot of hate. There goes all the magic," suggest that the singer is reflecting on a past relationship that was filled with intense emotions. The chorus repeats the phrase "She was great when she was great," which implies that the relationship had its ups and downs, but when things were good, they were really good.
The second verse adds more layers to the song's narrative with references to historical events. The line "I remember the kick 1956" could be a reference to Elvis Presley's appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was a significant moment in the history of rock and roll. The next line, "Back in '69 with a habit," could be a reference to the drug culture and counterculture of the late 1960s. These references hint at the idea that the relationship the singer is reflecting on took place during a time of significant cultural change.
Overall, "She Was Great" is a poignant and introspective song that captures the complexities of looking back on a past relationship.
