So Beau’s backstory goes:

Dad is told his fortune will be taken by the witch who gave it to him. So he hides his wife and child in his house and never lets them leave.

He’s also told he will have a son that will inherit his entire fortune, but then gets a daughter so he gives her a boy’s name. And tells her that she can’t have friends, she can’t leave the town or house, and needs to spend her entire childhood locked away because he fears someone will come for her. A child shouldn’t have ever been burdened with such knowledge, nor placed under such harsh restrictions but she was.

She grows up to be a rebellious teenager, but just because she wanted to make her dad proud. She tells her dad her idea to spread the business to Zadash, but he outright rejects it because of that stupid witch who’s done nothing but make her childhood miserable. So she takes it on herself to do it, without his approval. She rebels, as kids of strict authoritarian parents are want to do.

She gets caught, her girlfriend/partner is taken and never seen again. Her operation is shut down. And she is taken, against her will, to the monks of the Kobolt Soul. And the last thing her father says and does to her is punch her right in the face and tells her he never wants to see her again.

Months later, she gets a letter saying her mother has birthed a son. And that’s the last she ever hears from her family for years until this moment.

Her dad’s gaslighting was so impressive it almost made me believe him. But as someone who’s currently in college for a Psych degree, what her dad did was all types of wrong. So yes, her father was abusive, and Beau was in the right to call him out on it.

@Faith Jolley I've agreed to these in other videos, my comment wasn't that he wasn't abusive, but 1 that he can still love and worry for his daughter, and not be entirely his fault for the problem while still be being abusive and the main problem. And that just because a writer made a character and say's their justified doesn't mean they are, like if I wrote star wars and made Anikin turn to the sith just because he didn't gained the rank of master and that was justified, doesn't mean it was and you be right to call that out.

@Sweet Papa D Not really, Marisha created the character, which means that she decided what Beau's dad did to her and why. Marisha created Beau's father to be abusive because that was an important part of Beau's narrative and story.
Also, the tricky thing with gaslighting is that I don't think many people truly think in their internal monologe "I want to control and hurt this person, so I'll make them question their sanity and perception of reality." More often than not, gaslighting is done by an abusive person who's trying to convince themselves they're in the right, and that's where Beau's dad fits (but there are other reasons too). He physically assaulted his daughter after years of neglect and emotional abuse, and he knows deep down what he did was wrong, but he's trying to convince himself and everyone around them that he "did what was best, and my hand was forced, and really if Beau didn't want to be punched, kidnapped, and traumatized, she shouldn't have tried to break out of her assigned gender role and help with my company. And honestly, by traumatizing her, I made her into the person she is today, so I actually did a good thing!" Often, unhealthy behaviors are exhibited by people who have their own internal issues and flawed coping mechanisms, not because they're inherently malicious and genuinely enjoy hurting others. Trent, however, falls into the few people who do genuinely enjoy huring others. He's in the category of an abuser who does acknowledge that he gaslights and manipulates and does it very intentionally, and doesn't care because the ends justify the means to him. However, they both ended up with the same result. Caleb and Beau are both victims of abuse that rose above their circumstances and crafted themselves into better people. Trent and Thoreau both tried to take credit for their success by excusing their inexcusable behavior. There are parallels to their behaviors because abusers use similar tactics regardless of their motivations.

@Mrc V I mean true but also not, that's the thing with writing or examples of bad writing are you know like the mc just justified in killing this kid because the kid threw a rock at him there justified, not saying this is the case just saying what you used was a bad example. Quick question does that count as gaslighting. I thought gaslighting was a purposeful endeavor to bring someone down from the way you put it and the way it was shown, Beau's dad got a warning and became extremely protective and strict, Beau knowing her parents wanted a son tries to help but has to leave safety of house to do that get's put down every time, she lashes out and her father lashes back and this just increases, just at this point more sound like fear and bad parenting leading to a self for filling prophecy at this point, though your the phyc degree maybe you can weigh in.

Such a heartbreaking episode. The rp was so emotional and my heart broke for Beau. She’s just a girl who, most of the time, hides her emotions and her pain behind a wall of abrasive, aggressive toughness. Thoreau can eat shit. I hope the Lionetts don’t fuck up TJ like that, too.
Marisha is amazing and I hope Matt gave her a long hug after this.

Note: regardless of your opinion of Beau, you don’t get to say how someone’s childhood affected them or invalidate their experience or emotions. Shit that some may see as nothing can affect how you respond to people for the rest of your life.

Beau is growing and learning how to handle that baggage and is very aware of her past actions and how they weren’t good but that doesn’t mean that the pain she experienced and is experiencing isn’t valid and important.

Yeah, I find it really quite troubling the number of people that assume that because he had "good intentions" that it couldn't have been abusive or that no harm was done. And the fact that at the end of this episode Matt remarked that playing Thoreau made him feel "gross".

...of course, we're talking about a group of people who watched those scenes with Trent and came to the conclusion that Caleb was just wildly paranoid.

I know this doesn’t need to be said, but I really appreciate how Matt, Liam and Marisha have handled childhood abuse this game. They are very respectful, responsible, while also allowing it to be fun in this fictional world. Not all stories need to be super real, but this is. I am always ok with happy endings, but this scene feels right.

As someone who has gone through childhood with emotionally abusive parents, the way Matt depicts this is very real. The reactions that Caleb and Marisha react is extremely real (the way my mannerisms mirror Caleb is so startling.

To any who have gone through the same thing. Know that it gets better. It is hard, really hard, however there are happy endings. You can rebuild yourself afterward abuse with new friends and family.

This was the exact reason i fell in love with Beau. Up until this arc, she felt so abrasive, always perceptive of everyone but herself, and unendingly stubborn.
Then i figured out the reason i couldn't stand her was because she reminded me so much of myself. And this arc showed me WHY she and I are the way we are. And it helped so much

Sidenote: Matt's depiction of Thoreau was so accurate to my own stepdad, master gaslighter. To the point that up until then, I still felt like he was right when he told me I was always in the wrong and everything I did right was because of him in some way. And when Matt and everyone affirmed at the end of the session that "he (Thoreau) was gross to play and listen to", it helped me realize that maybe I'm not crazy.

Yasha being so soft and intimidating at the same time is one of my favorite parts of this scene.
I had to constantly remind myself that what Thoreau was saying and doing was not okay. It’s so hard to do that when you’ve gone through similar things and you’ve justified it to yourself for years and are still living with it and just yeah. Very important thing I cannot stress enough. Part of Thoreau's wish too the hag was to have the women he wanted. The mom I believe is cursed/charmed into the marriage with him.

I’m just saying from purely what we know, given the character, the man is a manipulator and a bad person, but as far as we know he didn’t brainwash his wife to love him. Besides, what we can easily tell from the interaction from Isharnai, she clearly didn’t make him the king of persuasion, she just told him where the plot was. I had to revisit this scene cuz Beau was already a fave, but this episode, phew. This just sealed it. I mean, the depth, the realness of it all, nothing straightforward but something complex and nuanced (that even some fans fell for it like wtf Matt amazing acting).
I love Marisha, and I love Beau and I was soooooooo happy Beau finally got to be open and emotional about her past, and Fjord was there for her and her tough act wasn't just brushed off by the othes.

@Hunter Tuggle dude, from what the show has talked about, Beau was basically locked up in her house for her whole life. Then she got rebellious cuz she was locked up her whole life, and wanted freedom, and then decided to try to help with the family business too to make her dad proud. Obviously she helped behind her dad's back since he didnt want her leaving, and when he found out, he got her girlfriend taken away forever, got her abducted, and then the last thing he did was punch her in the face and tell her to never come back. So all of the "bad behavior" on Beau'e part was 100% a result of Thereau's bad parenting, and the rest of it was her trying to help her dad. So theres no shot that she ever was part in being a "harasser" to her family other than possibly revolting against the abuse of her father, which could be seem as "bad behavior" from the parents POV, but which is by no definition actually harassing her parents. You're wrong

Consider the fact that the majority of the Nein are magic users of some sort, it's entirely possible that one of them counts as the "Witch" that took his kids, especially since his son seemed rather enamored with Beau and the rest of them as well. I love how Beau reacts to TJ. Here is a boy that has everything she has always wanted. Instead of being bitter towards him, she treats him like they have known each other their whole lives. I’m sure TJ’s hug certainly helped, but good strength of character on her part.

I'm not sure while rewatching this, but when I first watched this episode, I got the impression that Beau's parents seemed somewhat afraid when she came back, which I could understand why, but if they were, that makes this whole homecoming even sadder.

But I don’t hold as much judgment because even if his intentions were good. She was hurt by being sent away like she was. She’s getting better but I felt her reaction deeply when I watched this

I think the reason most people fall for Thoreau's act is because of Laura's 23 insight check; after matt whispers to her, at some point jester tells beau she believes what her dad's saying and that she thinks her dad loves her. Which is fair, but I can't imagine the DC for catching an experienced narcissist in the act being lower than 25. Just because she thinks he's being earnest doesnt mean he is.

also the dead giveaway that he's full of crap is when he said I'm sorry IF i didn't do a good job as father or something. IF? like what, you're unsure? cmon now.

I wish she would. But based on my experience of having an abusive dad, I doubt it. I’m strong and competent normally (obvi not as much as Beau lol) but when I’m around him or even thinking of him I’m crippled. Gaslighters can control and frighten you like nothing else and they whole time all you ever want is their approval. It’s gross. I hope she gets her justice though and can move on happily without him.

I feel bad for myself to almost believe Beauragard's father, or even sympathize to Beau and her father, but in the same time, i love Beau. And he's so good to gaslight (like what the comments said below) that i almost believe.
He reminded my own father, i always sympathize him at a young age. Parents, separate (divorce doesn't happen in my country so it's bullshit) when i realize what my father is, he's taking responsible to help my mother or my siblings and me.
I really need help because i feel bad for almost sympathizing, is it bad if you almost sympathize how your different but in the same time you love the person aka Beauragard

Beau herself have said that She was not a perfect child but when She tried to show intrest in helping with the bussnies her father dissmised the idea only because the hag who did help him get his fourtune said it would come back for a payment.

I had a gaslighting narcissist for a father so I identify with Beau in this situation- which is the point. Emotional and psychological abuse can cause the same trauma as physical abuse can. This is a fact. Nobody is saying the dad never went through his own mistreatments, the point is there’s no excuse for it and Beau doesn’t deserve it because nobody does. No matter what you go through you don’t get to hurt people. Beau was a teen when she “misbehaved”- and she didn’t kill anyone btw. She acted out as a KID, not as an adult who chose to have children and then took out her issues on her kids. There is no excuse for him. Beau has taken responsibility for the immature things she’s done as a reaction to trauma, has her father? No. Further, fans just identify with and care about the main characters, what’s wrong with that? We’re supposed to.

Beau didn't murder people. She stole her fathers wine and sold it. She was a smuggler. She was a kid reacting badly to the environment she was raised. But Beau's father was an adult man taking out his own traumas on his child. He suffered an abusive childhood, and was stressed which explains his behavior but it doesn't excuse it. Beau has changed as a person, she recognized how shitty her behavior was and worked (and isbstill working) to become a kinder person. She is much different than the Beau we first met at the beginning of the campaign. Her father has only deflected blame. All his apologies boil down to "but it wasn't my fault" and he shows no desire to change his behavior. Simplified: a child and an adult are put through a miserable situation, both get mad at each other, and both throw a temper tantrum. Who of the two should be expected to step above it and be the role model and guide the other through? A child shouldn't be expected to parent a parent. When you have a kid, you are making a comittment to love, raise, and guide them. Look parents aren't perfect sure. There we a couple times where my parents got irritated and snapped at me when tensions were high. But after things cooled down they came to me and apologized and basically said "Our behavior in that situation wasn't acceptable and you didn't deserve that." There was no "but you upset us" or "it wasn't completely our fault you made us mad" They accepted that as the adult in the situation they had done wrong. They set a better example. And I hold a great deal of respect for them. And I try to do the same, I'm hardly a moral paragon, but my parents set a standard of behavior for me and I seek to follow that. Thoreau has done the opposite of that, honestly it sounds like he never apologized for his behavior prior to this. And his apology now barely qualifies as an apology, as he avoids actually taking complete responsibility for his behavior and still shifts blame to Beau and his father.

We like to point fingers, but not ask ourselves if we're guilty of the same thing. Danielle got offended by his opinion and threw an insult at Silence.

This goes full circle to the character Beau. She hides her pain through looking tough and aggression. People who are hurt sometimes react with anger; It's how we protect ourselves. Personally I understand Beau as a character because I know where she is coming from. Silence pushing back against someone who belittled him is literally the exact same as Beau.

Then the cycle continues, where everyone is defending themselves against insults that hurt.

I don't know, I think Marisha is acting as if Beau's parents are awful and Matt wasn't expecting this exactly, because I didn't really get that from them. They came off as pretty reasonable, far from perfect sure, but definitely not as bad as to warrant this reaction from her.

She did some really shitty things when she was young and her father didn't know how to react to that, so he sent her to people who could help and make her a better person, which they did.

I don't see the appeal of her character or backstory. Someone explain to me how this nosy annoying brute is likeable outside of her monk combat abilities? Shes actually blaming her father for her own stupid actions as a kid, says she didnt get enough attention, as a single child, and treats her childhood like it was some horrible orphanage that mistreated her when in reality she was just a spoiled brat. But hey it's her dad's fault, even though he made the right decision to send her off to the cobalt sol. She shouldnt be coming back and. Blaming him, she should be thanking him.

sathrago This comment section is so fucking difficult for me. Having a dad who gaslighted me my whole life, who’d repeatedly abuse me and apologise and make me feel sorry for it only to do it again. And then lying to my baby brother and using him to give himself the happiness he never gave me, in a spiral of narcissistic denial. Never confronting my temperamental mother who lies to herself more than she does to me - while being so much more overtly physical than my father. He laughs at her, and then forgives her. He plays the victim, and defends her because she just “doesn’t know any better”, because WE should. The constant shaming, belittling and pretentious pride twists their children. Everyone loves him, my mother’s naïveté makes her popular. Yet as their child, talking to them makes me anxious, sad and depressing and it’s just so confusing. It took me a decade to find someone willing to give me a chance to just understand - why I felt so confused to want to kill myself living under that roof. The gaslighting was twofold, and it digs deep. Rebellion wasn’t an opportunity in my case. Isolation and fake words were, only they were true to my parents. How I never feel confident, being a stranger in my own body because I was told I looked disgusting. My hair, my body, I can’t look myself in the mirror. Compliments feel fake, they make me feel used. I only learned there was something wrong, when so many others found me attractive. Yet I felt so gross. Family is only what we make it to be. It’s a process that takes years to build, and shorter to break - and with enough time to twist into something unrecognisable.

Beauregard, I see you. And Matt, I hated you for those few moments. It says so much yet so little when so many take her father at face value. Empathising is hard when we don’t understand. Or worse in Thoreau’s case, when that understanding is replaced with blind narcissism and a lifetime of denial. Pity from strangers isn’t what I’m looking for. I just hope that someone, somebody can learn from this.
