Caravan Of Love
Beautiful South And The Housemartins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you ready Are you ready
Are you ready Are you ready
Are you ready for the time of your life
It's time to stand up and fight
It's alright It's alright
Hand in hand we take a caravan to the mother land
One by one we gonna stand up with pride
One that can't be denied
Stand up Stand up
From the highest mountain, valley low
We'll join together with hearts of gold
Now the children of the world can see
This is a better place for us to be
The place in which we were born
So neglected and torn apart

Every woman every man
Join the caravan of love
(Stand up) stand up
Stand up
Everybody take a stand
Join the caravan of love
(Stand up) stand up
Stand up

I'm your brother
I'm your brother don't you know
She's my sister
She's my sister don't you know

We'll be living in a world of peace
And the day when everyone is free
We'll bring the young and the old
Won't you let your love flow, from your heart

Every woman every man
Join the caravan of love
(Stand up) stand up
Stand up
Every body take a stand
Join the caravan of love
(Stand up) stand up
Stand up

I'm your brother
I'm your brother don't you know
She's my sister
She's my sister don't you know

So are you ready ( he's coming )
Are you ready ( he's coming )
Are you ready ( he's coming )
Are you ready ( he's coming on the caravan )
You better get ready ( go for it )
You better get ready ( go for it )

You better get ready ( go for it )
You better get ready

Overall Meaning

“Caravan of Love” was originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in 1985 as a gospel song that prompts individuals to band together and carry out Christ’s work of love to overcome hate, racism and war. Interestingly, the version created by Beautiful South and The Housemartins that year used the melody but changed most of the lyrics to affirm an inclusive message that would speak to anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs. The two groups also brought the song to the mainstream by giving it a pop sound and a unique rock and roll arrangement.

Beginning with the repetitive chant of “Are you ready?”, the song invites listeners to stand up and fight for peace and equality in the world. The reference to “caravan” implies a group of people making a journey together for a purpose. In this case, the purpose is to create a better world for everyone. The song specifically highlights the need for people of different races and genders to join forces, with lyrics like “Every woman, every man/ Join the caravan of love.” The song also introduces the idea of brotherhood and sisterhood among all people, beyond just biological ties.

Ultimately, the song is a call to action to make the world a better place by putting aside differences and coming together in love. It encourages standing up against hate and division, while traveling in a “caravan of love” to the “motherland”, that is, the place where everyone was born. The powerful message of “Caravan of Love” continues to inspire people worldwide, almost four decades since its release.

Me and my best mate were a bit stoned one night flicking through music channels (must have been around 2009) this comes on and we were in tears of laughter, it became our anthem and we used to sing it whilst trying to also do the harmonising. He passed a couple of months ago of a brain tumour so this song hits even stronger now ❤
