Prologue
Beauty and the Beast (French) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Narattor:
Once upon a time, in a faraway land,
A young Prince lived in a shining castle.
Although he had everything his heart desired,
The Prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind.

But then, one winter's night,
An old beggar woman came to the castle
And offered him a single Rose
In return for shelter from the bitter cold.
Repulsed by her haggard appearance,
The Prince sneered at the gift,
And turned the old woman away.

But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances,
For Beauty is found within.

And when he dismissed her again,
The old woman's ugliness melted away
To reveal a beautiful Enchantress.

The Prince tried to apologize, but it was too late,
For she had seen that there was no love in his heart.
And as punishment,
She transformed him into a hideous beast,
And placed a powerful spell on the castle,
And all who lived there.

Ashamed of his monstrous form,
The beast concealed himself inside his castle,
With a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world.

The Rose she had offered,
Was truly an enchanted rose,
Which would bloom for many years.
If he could learn to love another,
And earn her love in return
By the time the last petal fell,
Then the spell would be broken.
If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast
For all time.

As the years passed,

He fell into despair, and lost all hope,
For who could ever learn to love...a Beast?

Overall Meaning

The prologue to "Beauty and the Beast (French)" introduces the audience to the Prince, a selfish and spoiled man who lived in a castle filled with everything his heart desired. One winter's night, an old beggar woman came to the castle to seek shelter from the cold and offered the Prince a single rose in return. The Prince, repulsed by her appearance, sneered at her gift and turned her away. The beggar woman warned him to not be deceived by appearances and that beauty is found within. When the Prince dismissed her again, she revealed herself as a beautiful Enchantress and transformed the Prince into a hideous beast, placing a spell on the castle and all its inhabitants. The only way to break the spell was for the Beast to learn to love and earn someone's love in return before the last petal of the enchanted rose fell. However, the Beast lost all hope and fell into despair, thinking that nobody could ever learn to love a beast.

This prologue sets the tone for the rest of the musical, highlighting the theme of looking beyond appearances and the importance of love and compassion. It also establishes the conflict that the Beast must face and how his journey towards redemption will unfold. The use of the enchanted rose as a plot device adds a sense of urgency and serves as a tangible representation of the Beast's transformation.

E perdeu toda a esperança
Pois quem seria capaz de amar um monstro?

0:11 Always loved that little tune. It evokes the perfect "tragic fairy tale" ambience. Sorrow, loneliness, mystery, desolation & hope all wrapped up in the same fourteen notes.

@keithmofley8275

I'd say Sombor Wonder

@saraa350

Agreed! It reminds me a little of Across The Stars from the Stars Wars soundtrack. A tragic love story in seven notes

@wolfanimemackennag7975

Same! that little tune is just amazing!

@caitlynsitte707

I just saw the musical for the first time locally and absolutely fell in love with that little part because it’s echoed throughout the musical even in the background music. I’ve been trying to figure out how to find more of the music to know how many songs it’s featured in!

@treetree442

i watched this movie so many times as a little kid, it’s odd hearing that part today always makes the hair on the back of neck stand up.

@vanessasultana2602

Am I the only one who gets emotional with how beautiful this is?... It's like so beautiful it hurts?

@TheYazmanian

It makes me want to cry

@treefrog9194

No i completely understand
