Salt
Because They Can Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don’t wanna be the one to carve the scars,
To draw a line and break your heart,
Do the honours and make a start.
‘Cause I’ve been waiting, procrastinating,
Hiding from facing my conscience,
Free my shoulders, rid me of these monsters
But we’re fading, fading away,
Yeah we’re fading, fading away.

And if the last thing that you’re gonna say
It shouldn’t have ended this way.
I’ll take it with a grain of salt,
And be on my way.
But the last thing that I’m gonna say;
I didn’t have the guts
To put you through the pain.
Take it with a grain of salt,
I’ll be on my way.
We’re fading, fading away.

And I’ve been bleeding guilt from my heart my mind,
I’m sick of doing time for the pettiest crimes.
Don’t judge me with your jury,
Just read the fucking signs.
I want to tear apart, terrorise your heart
It plays me like a game.
I want to feel, I want wounds to heal,
I don’t want to be this safe.
But we’re fading, fading away.

And if the last thing that you’re gonna say
It shouldn’t have ended this way.
I’ll take it with a grain of salt,
And be on my way.
But the last thing that I’m gonna say;
I didn’t have the guts
To put you through the pain.
Take it with a grain of salt,
I’ll be on my way.

You’ve got the answers,
Why don’t you answer my questions?
Why do I live, why do I breathe this tension?
I want war, just to fight, I want dark when it’s light.
I don’t know anymore,
What’s wrong or what’s right.

Fading, fading away.
We’re Fading, fading away.

And if the last thing that I’m gonna say
Shouldn’t have ended this way.

I’ll take it with a grain of salt,
And be on my way.

Overall Meaning

The song "Salt" by Because They Can delves into the complex emotions of guilt, regret, and the fear of causing pain in a relationship. The singer begins by expressing reluctance to hurt their partner and make things worse, even if their actions have already caused emotional scars. They feel trapped by their own indecisiveness and inability to confront their own conscience. The chorus repeats the phrase "take it with a grain of salt, and be on my way," which suggests that the singer is resigned to accepting the consequences of their actions and moving on, even if it means leaving behind a fractured relationship.

The second verse reveals that the singer has a conflicting desire to tear apart their partner's heart and "terrorize" them, which implies a sense of wanting to inflict pain in order to feel something. This juxtaposition of wanting to both avoid causing pain and also wanting to feel more deeply creates a sense of emotional turmoil in the song. The bridge introduces a plea for answers and a sense of confusion about what direction to take. Overall, "Salt" portrays the complexity and struggle of relationships and the decisions that can lead to their unraveling.

should’ve mentioned potassium and how most people are deficient on it plus it helps regulate sodium levels

Talking With Docs

We do talk about that in the long form video which is coming but it has its own risks for some populations

GamerKid19

ughh the ignorance of doctors they should be banned for misinformation.

"Salt substitutes that contain potassium may cause hyperkalaemia with life threatening consequences in susceptible patients, as the following case report illustrates." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1124926/

Jesus

@Jason C.pretty common sense. If you aren’t sweating a lot you’re going to overdo it. Potassium is one of the main electrolytes lost during sweating. So get your cardio in

Dr Siddiqui

Potassium to sodium ratio is also very important.

My Dad always added way too much salt to his food. So about 18 years ago when he got Parkinson's and moved in with me for his last 5 years, I quit adding any salt to set an example for him. I still don't add any salt. But now that I am conditioned to no added salt, when eating out I am often surprised at how salty restaurant food tastes, especially at lower priced restaurants.

Talking With Docs

It is crazy how salty restaurant food is

Dawn Schoeller

When I eat restaurant food, I am so thirsty for hours afterward because of the salt!

Lolita *Betty Boo*

Very good point As the cheaper the food the less quality so they over do it on salt. We learnt from experience.. Thats why we very often mostly have home cooking nowadays.
