Asshole
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your brains went black
when she took back her love
and she put it out into the sun,
The birds did fly
when the heavens all went dry,
and the cigarettes were smoking by themselves.

She'll do anything
She'll do anything
She'll do anything
to make you feel like an asshole.

Call her name,
she looks the same as you,
question marks stretched across her skin,
She dangles carrots,
makes you feel embarrassed
to be the fool you know you are.

She'll do anything
She'll do anything

She'll do anything
to make you feel like an asshole.

Overall Meaning

Beck’s song “Asshole” has been largely interpreted as a commentary on toxic relationships and the destructive behavior that can come with them. The lyrics detail the effects of a breakup on the singer’s mental state, highlighting the way the experience has left him feeling hollow, foolish, and broken. The line “Your brains went black when she took back her love” suggests that the singer has been left in a state of shock and confusion by his partner’s decision to end the relationship. The image of the “cigarettes smoking by themselves” reinforces this sense of disorientation, creating an atmosphere of surreal, dreamlike confusion.

The chorus provides the song’s central theme, with the repeated refrain “She’ll do anything to make you feel like an asshole.” Here, the singer seems to be commenting on his former partner’s attempts to manipulate and control him, using guilt and shame as weapons to keep him in line. The line “She dangles carrots, makes you feel embarrassed to be the fool you know you are” suggests that the singer feels trapped in an impossible situation, unable to escape the cycle of mistreatment and subjugation.

Overall, “Asshole” is a dark, moody song that explores the emotional toll of toxic relationships. Its haunting, melancholy melodies and introspective lyrics create a powerful sense of alienation and despair, making it a deeply affecting work of art.

This song is so awesome.. I can't get tired of it.

CHORGG

It's cool how the hook of this song manages to sound funny on one hand, and then on the other end of it it's simultaneously somber and hopeless. The line repeated three times, She'll do anything.. The third time with the harmony added in, almost making it seem happy the third time. Like you can count on her, everytime, as if by magic.. Ya know? And then just that emphasis.. like it's amusing and depressing at once. "to Make you FEEL Like an asshole..."

I did not know this was originally a Beck song. I'm familiar with the cover Tom Petty did for the soundtrack to the album She's the One. I actually thought this was a Tom Petty song until I happened to be reading the liner notes one night. I LOVE this song.

Ed Helvey

Same with me. It's pretty funny that this song ended up in a film with someone (Jennifer Aniston) from that shitty TV show "Friends"
