Missing
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I prayed heaven today
Would bring its hammer down on me
And pound you out of my head
I can't think with you in it

I dragged all that I owned down a dirt road
To find you my shoes worn out and used
They can't take me much farther

Something always takes the place

Of missing pieces

you can take and put together even though
You know there's something missing

The sun burned a hole in my roof
I can't seem to fix it
I hope the rain doesn't come
And wash me down the gutter

She rides in a car like a queen on a card
And the guns of her mind aim a line
Straight at mine to a heart that was broke

tried to feel but got choked in the smoke of
A desert
A beach with no leisure a night that's so blue
Feed the aching in you and the background

Birds take a flight from the earth
Where the bonfire burns and the night
Current turns on a lifeboat floating
Down a river of sleep

I can't see her hollow eyes

I'm walking along with my boots full of rocks
I can't believe these tears were mine
I'll give them to you to put away in a box

Something always takes the place of
Missing pieces you can take and put
Together even though
You know there's something missing

Something always missing always
Someone missing something

Overall Meaning

The song "Missing" by Beck is a brooding, introspective piece filled with images of desperation and longing. The opening lines of the song express the singer's wish that the heavens would "bring its hammer down" on him, pounding the memory of his lost love out of his head. He finds himself unable to move on, unable to think with her presence constantly on his mind. He describes dragging everything he owns down a dirt road in search of her, wearing out his shoes in the process. Despite all his effort, he can't seem to get any closer to finding her.

The theme of missing pieces runs throughout the song, as the singer tries to fill the void left by his lost love. He compares it to a puzzle with missing pieces, something that can be put together but is always incomplete. He sings of trying to feel but getting choked by the smoke of a desert, a beach with no leisure, and a night that's so blue. He longs to ease his pain, to "feed the aching in you," but there always seems to be something missing, always someone missing something.

The chorus repeats the idea that something will always take the place of missing pieces, but the final lines of the song suggest a glimmer of hope, as the singer walks along with boots full of rocks, tears that he'll give away to be put away in a box. Perhaps this is a sign that the singer is beginning to let go of his pain and is ready to move on.
