Think I'm In Love
Beck Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Don't wanna let the night get ahead of myself
Whisperin' her love through a smoke ring smile
She doesn't know what happens when she's around
I think I'm in love
But it makes me kinda nervous to say so
I think I'm in loveBut it makes me kinda nervous to say so
Probably lay my head on a wooden floor
Tell her I was tired from working the store
Counting all the cash from an old shoe box
Saving up to buy her something she wants
I think I'm in love
But it makes me kinda nervous to say so
I think I'm in love
But it makes me kinda nervous to say so
What if it's wrong?
What if it's wrong
To pray in vain?
What does it mean
To fake your death
To wake up tainted?
Take a little picture in a photo booth
Keep it in a locket, and I think of you
Both of our pictures, face to face
Take off your necklace and throw it away
I think I'm in love
But it makes me kinda nervous to say soI think I'm in love
But it makes me kinda nervous to say so
Really think I better get a hold of myself
Don't wanna let the night get ahead of myself
Whisperin' her love through a smoke ring smile
She doesn't know what happens when she's around
I think I'm in love
Think I'm in love

In Beck's song "Think I'm In Love," the singer seems to be experiencing a strong attraction towards someone, but at the same time he finds himself feeling nervous and doubtful about his emotions. He's afraid to admit his feelings for fear of being wrong or being rejected. He wants to get a hold of himself and not let his emotions get ahead of him. He describes the woman he’s attracted to as someone who makes him feel indescribable emotions that he can only express in a sort of a “smoke ring smile” that she has. He’s probably so charmed by her and feels like his emotions are outside of his control.
The second verse portrays the singer trying to connect with the woman, even though he is nervous about making himself vulnerable. He thinks about showing her his weaknesses in order to connect with her, even telling her how tired he is from work, and saving up his money to buy something to make her happy. The bridge of the song touches on the idea of questioning one's faith and self-deception. He’s asking whether or not it's wrong to hope, only to be disappointed when the hopes fail to come true. He wonders what it means to pretend to be someone you're not, and to wake up feeling contaminated.
The final verse describes a moment between the two where they take a picture together in a photo booth, and the singer keeps it in a locket to remind him of her. When he imagines them both looking at the picture, he has a sense of pressure to prove his feelings for her. He suggests they take off their necklaces and throw them away, possibly as a symbol of starting fresh without burdens. The chorus is repeated several times and could be interpreted as a mantra the singer uses to convince himself that he really is in love and to push through his nerves.

The black guy is James Gadson, one of the funkiest drummers whom Beck recruited for this album. Gadson played on funk classics from way back in the day and is responsible for some of the best beats from that period (60's - 80's).
@devin9866
Scrolled until I found someone who noticed the legend standing behind him. Says a lot about Beck to have a guy like that playing on your stuff!
