Waiting for a Train
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm an alien from another sphere.
The thing I like about the earth is the range of colors.
Fantastic to mundane. Brilliant to dull.
As I was penetrating the ozone,
I perchanced to notice the orange peel-like
Quality of the light playing upon the, the ocean.
I gotta go right now
Someone is videotaping me in my spaceship.

All around a water tank
Just a-waitin' for a train
A thousand miles away from home
Just a-waitin' for'n the rain
I walked up to a break-man
Just to give him a line of talk
He said, "If you got money,
I'll see that you don't walk"
"I haven't got a nickel
Not a penny for to show."
"Get off, get off, you railroad bum!"
And he slammed the boxcar door
They let me off in Texas

A state I dearly love
The moon, the stars above me and what else?

Overall Meaning

In "Waitin," Beck sings from the perspective of an extraterrestrial being who is fascinated by the range of colors that Earth has to offer. He describes the beauty of the "orange peel-like quality of the light playing upon the ocean," before being abruptly interrupted by someone videotaping him in his spaceship. The song’s lyrics are vague and surreal, creating a cosmic-yet-whimsical feel to the surreal narrative.

Moving around the verse that Beck sings, the song also includes a devolution of a hobo's adventures, exploring the archetype of the wandering bandit, and the performance of travelling songs in general. The song takes on a classic train hopper ballad twist, describing the experience of a vagrant who is waiting for a train to bring him to his next destination. The vagrant walks up to a break-man and attempts to talk to him, but the break-man dismisses him and tells him to leave if he does not have any money. The vagrant does not have a penny to show and gets thrown out of the boxcar.

The title for “Waitin’” came when Beck was inspired by a photograph he saw of a hobo waiting for a train. He didn't actually write the song for several years after that. The juxtaposition of the two lyrics — waitin’ for a spaceship and waitin’ for a train — is proof that Beck’s talent for creating songs with a myriad of meanings is everlasting.
