Waking Light
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking light, it grew from the shadow
Brace yourself to the morning low
Night is gone, long way turning
You've waited long enough to know

When the memory leaves you
Somewhere you can't make it home
When the morning comes to meet you
Lay me down in waking light

No one sees you here, roots are all covered
There's such a life to go and how much can you show?
Day is gone on a landslide of rhythm
It's in your lamplight burning low

When the memory leaves you
Somewhere you can't make it home
When the morning comes to meet you
Rest your eyes in waking light

When the memory leaves you
Somewhere you can't make it home

When the morning comes to meet you
Open your eyes with waking light

Overall Meaning

Beck’s “Waking Light” is a reflective song that centers around the notion of finding hope and rejuvenation after a long period of darkness. The song begins with the line “Waking light, it grew from the shadow”, suggesting that the light that the singer now finds himself in, has emerged from a previously dark place. It can be interpreted that the singer has gone through a difficult trial, and has now found his way out of it. As the song progresses, Beck sings about the journey and how long it may have taken to reach this light. The lyric “Night is gone, long way turning” likely refers to the journey that led him to this light, and how much he had to go through to get there.

As the chorus repeats, Beck alludes to the idea that in a sense, the singer has found himself reborn. The lines “When the memory leaves you, somewhere you can’t make it home” suggest that the past is no longer with him or holding him back, giving him the freedom to move forward with clarity. This idea is reinforced in the line “open your eyes with waking light”. The symbolism of opening one's eyes can be interpreted as opening oneself up to new possibilities, and being reborn with a new, fresh perspective.

In conclusion, “Waking Light” is a powerful and introspective song, with strong spiritual themes of rebirth, growth, and renewal. Beck's haunting yet beautiful voice draws us in, as he takes us on a journey to a place of hope, peace, and inner strength.

Beck's mourning phase transformed into a (new) morning phase. Just wonderful stuff from the soul of this man.

My high school choir director once said, "If, when you listen to music, you get goose bumps, you know it's good music." Well, Mr. Leimer, and Beck, the bumps rose yesterday and they're still there.
