Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you there
Long black hair
Your eyes just stare
Your mind is turning

You know I'll laugh
I won't take it back
I've seen your eyes
I know what your thinking

We'll shoot our guns
We'll have fun
Don't ever doubt it

And when I say
"Fare thee well,
My only friend"
Oh, how the days go
Oh, how the days go

Your setting sun
Your broken drum
Your little drugs

Never forget you

Never forget you
Never forget you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beck's song "Broken Drum" are full of mysterious, abstract imagery that's open to interpretation. One interpretation of the lyrics suggests that the song is about a person who's struggling with addiction or self-destructive behavior. The "long black hair" and "little drugs" mentioned in the song could be references to drug use or drug addiction. The "setting sun" and "broken drum" could be symbolic of the person's deteriorating physical or emotional condition. The singer of the song, possibly Beck himself, tries to comfort and reassure this person, telling them that they'll have fun and never be forgotten, even if they continue down a destructive path.

The song's use of abstract imagery and poetic language makes it difficult to pin down any one specific meaning. However, the chorus of the song, with its repeated phrase "Never forget you," suggests that the singer is both aware of and saddened by the person's struggles. The use of the second-person perspective in the song also lends a sense of intimacy and empathy, as if the singer is speaking directly to the person they're trying to help.

Overall, "Broken Drum" is a beautifully melancholic song that's open to a range of interpretations. Its enigmatic lyrics and haunting melody make it a standout track from Beck's impressive discography.

Beck himself says this is his favorite remix ever. When asked what Boards Of Canada brought to the song, Beck explained, "Well, they brought something that was there, but then they just added a whole new dimension. I guess it's quite an emotional song and they brought out something bittersweet in it that was kinda hippyish, but it doesn't maim you with saccharine. It kinda gets you right in the chest.

Love these pieces of trivia! Can never know enough about Boards and their friends.

Johnny Creighton

Reminds me of when I visited Vancouver, and on the third day, hitched the highway to Fairbanks Alaska, in August 1996. Went through the Seven Sisters' mountains, stopped at a slag heap to look for jade, later stopped in Whitehorse, caught a ride with a submariner in a hot red convertible, among other adventures.

@Johnny Creighton whats a cool story!✌

I came across this song randomly. After an emotionally distressing few days. This song came on and I sat in silence, hypnotized, staring nowhere, listening to my soul expressed. That hypnotic meloncholy sweetness. That was years ago, when I hear it now, it takes me right back to that room. I can see almost every detail. Not just of the room, but that place in time. I can remember the places I'd go, the people I hung out with, the liquor I drank, the graveyard across the street, the steps I would sit on trying to make sense of anything. What a fucked up time that was. I didn't learn a goddamn thing either.

Soul Slip

Haha great depressing story... love it and have experienced similar things haha... life is a messed up show sometimes... it’s funny, but in a nihilistic way in those moments... like... “we are just here for the show..” lol best part was.... “the graveyard across the street..” hope things are better now... cheers
