These Words
Bedingfield Natasha Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(These words are my own, yeah yeah yeah)

Threw some chords together
The combination D.E.F
It's who I am it's what I do
And I was gonna lay it down for you.

I'm trying to focus my attention
But I feel so A.D.D
I need some help some inspiration
But it's not coming easily...

Tryn'a find the magic
Tryn'a write a classic
Don't you know, don't you know, don't you know?
Wastebin full of paper
Clever rhymes, see ya later.

These words are my own
From my heart flown
I love you I love you
I love you I love you!
There's no other way
To better say
I love you, I love you

Read some Byron, Shelly, and Keats
Recited it over a Hip Hop beat
I'm having trouble saying what I mean
With dead poets and drum machines.

You know I had some studio time booked
But I couldn't find the killa hook
Now you've gone and raised the bar
right up (this is on a separate line!)
Nothing I write is ever good enough.

These words are my own
From my heart flown
I love you I love you
I love you I love you!
There's no other way
To better say
I love you, I love you

These words are my own
From my heart flown
I love you I love you
I love you I love you!
There's no other way
To better say
I love you, I love you (love you)

I'm getting of my stage
The curtains pull away
No hyperbole to hide behind
My naked sole's exposé

Whoah oh oh oh (etc etc etc)

Tryn'a find the magic
Tryn'a write a classic
Don't you know, don't you know, don't you know?
Wastebin full of paper
Clever rhymes, see ya later.

These words are my own
From my heart flown
I love you I love you
I love you I love you!
There's no other way
To better say
I love you, I love you (love you)

These words are my own
From my heart flown
They're from my heart
I love you I love you
I love you I love you!
There's no other way
To better say
I love you, I love you (love you)

These words are my own
They're from my heart
I love you I love you
That's all I got to say
Can't think of a better way

That's all I got to say
I love you is that OK?

Overall Meaning

" These Words " is a song by Natasha Bedingfield, released in 2004. The lyrics describe the struggles that she faces in coming up with a song to write for her audience. She's trying to find the right words and to create a melody that will make people happy, but she's feeling discouraged. She's read works by famous poets, but now she needs her own inspiration. She mentions her own struggles with attention deficit disorder (ADD), and how it makes it especially difficult to write. Despite these challenges, she ultimately finds the perfect lyrics and melody to confess her love to someone she cares about.

The song begins with Bedingfield describing the process of writing a song. She's "threw some chords together," but soon realizes that she's struggling to come up with the right words. She's searching for "the magic" and trying to create something that will become a classic. She's even resorted to reading poetry by famous poets like Byron, Shelley, and Keats, but she's still having trouble.

Throughout the song, Bedingfield expresses her frustration with the creative process. She has a wastebin full of paper filled with "clever rhymes," but they're not good enough. She goes to the studio hoping to find inspiration, only to find that she can't come up with a "killa hook." She's feeling defeated and frustrated, but eventually, she finds the right words that come straight from her own heart.
