Coalman
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I tell my troubles to the coalman
He's a coalman but he understands
He's not such a very very old man
He's a soul man and he takes my hand
He makes a man feel good when he's down
Head is touching the ground
He's going to help you if he can
He's a coalman

I've been waiting for the coalman
He's a whole man and he treats me nice
Ev'rybody needs a coalman
When you're low man , you can get advice
He makes a man feel good when he's down
Head is touching the ground
He's going to help you if he can
He's a coalman

I need her loving so much the feeling is too much to bear
You've got to have somebody, when she's not there

I tell my troubles to the coalman
He's a coalman but he understands
He's not such a very very old man
He's a soul man and he takes my hand
He makes a man feel good when he's down
Head is touching the ground
He's going to help you if he can
He's a coalman

I need her loving so much the feeling is too much to bear
You've got to have somebody when she's not there

I tell my troubles to the coalman
He's a coalman but he understands
He's not such a very very old man
He's a soul man and he takes my hand
He's gonna help you when he's down
When your head is touching the ground
And he'll help you if he can

He's a coalman
Coalman, coalman , coalman,,(repeat/fade)

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees song "Coalman" is about a man who feels lost and in need of help, and turns to the coalman for advice and comfort. The metaphor of the coalman suggests that he is a working-class man who understands the struggles of everyday life and the difficulties of making ends meet. The coalman is not only a provider of fuel for the fire but also a source of comfort and support for those in need.

The lyrics express the singer's need for someone to confide in, especially when his lover is not around. The pain of being alone and without love is too much to bear, and he turns to the coalman for solace. The singer believes that the coalman is an empathetic figure who understands his plight and is willing to lend a helping hand.

The repetition of the phrase "He makes a man feel good when he's down" reinforces the idea that the coalman is a friend in need. The song's title and chorus, "Coalman," serves as a metaphor for everyday people who are often overlooked or undervalued. In the end, the coalman provides a sense of hope and the belief that there is someone who can offer help in difficult times.

Man the brothers Gibb are the most prolific song writers. I hope our youth keeps them remembered! They can write pop, gospel, r&b, country, psychedelic, anything! God bless those brothers for helping me relax for 42 years!

I've always liked Ronnie Burns singing this and "Exit Stage Right", but never knew they were actually Bee Gees songs. Very much enjoyed hearing them singing these 2 great pieces of music ... Thanks heaps for posting ... Wayne

Same here, never knew it was a Bee Gees song

Love playing this for people that only know the disco Bee Gees. I knew an Australian (Mark Taylor) that hated them so much he wouldn't even concede this was a great song.

This sounds like a cross between The Beatles and The Hollies, with Barry sounding like John Lennon in a way!

I'm trying to curb my indignation, [but am grateful], that it is a Pommy educating this Aussie about my fav. group Bee Gee's. Had no idea, until today, that my music world hero's wrote this song. It was a top 10 hit here, in Australia, when sung by one of our popular singers, Ronnie Burns. Apparently, they also wrote "Exit Stage Right" for Ronnie. Thanks for your research.

As a kid in the 60s I found a five pound note lying in the road, I knew the coalman had just been round so I chased after him and asked him if it was his, he said it was ... obviously.
