Grease
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw my problems and I'll see the light
We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger we can go too far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

They think our love is just a growin' pain
Why don't they understand? It's just a cryin' shame
Their lips are lyin', only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel, grease is the word

(Grease is the word, is the word that you heard)
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

This is a life of illusion, a life of control
Mixed with confusion - what're we doin' here?

We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality, belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

(Grease is the word, is the word, is the word)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Bee Gees' hit song "Grease" delve into the power of love and self-expression. The singer starts off by acknowledging their problems and pining for a better life, but they have hope because they have love in their life. The singer recognizes that their love is genuine, but others doubt the validity of their love and view it as a passing phase. The singer calls out those who are pretending and acknowledges that real love is what they feel for each other.

The chorus emphasizes the importance of the word "grease," which is symbolic of the singer's acceptance of their unconventional identity. The word has meaning, a groove, and represents the time and place the singer exists in. The singer acknowledges that they are breaking away from conventionality to make a better life for themselves.

The song concludes with the singer questioning the reality of their existence and what they're doing in the world. However, they return to the refrain of "grease is the word," indicating that despite their uncertainty, they still firmly believe in the power of love and self-expression.

I love how they pay tribute to Frankie Valli's version by playing one verse from his recording for the movie. The Bee Gees are such a class act, it's too bad they never really got the recognition they deserved and were labeled as just a disco group. They were so much more.

Hellwyck

Are you having a laugh? The BeeGees are one of the most respected and recognised groups in the world, not only for their music but for the music they wrote for other people!

Shannon

@Hellwyck By people who know music, yes. To the average person they are looked at as a disco group and nothing more.

Barbara Webb

Shannon same with The Beach Boys - people think they are only surf music.
