Grease Theme
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I saw my problems and I'll see the light
We got a lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right
There ain't no danger, we can go too far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

They think our love is just a growin' pain
Why don't they understand, it's just a cryin' shame
Their lips are lyin', only real is real
We stop the fight right now, we got to be what we feel, grease is the word

Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

We take the pressure and we throw away conventionality
Belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

This is a life of illusion, a life of control
Mixed with confusion what're we doin' here?

We take the pressure, and we throw away conventionality
Belongs to yesterday
There is a chance that we can make it so far
We start believin' now that we can be who we are, grease is the word

Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

Grease is the word, is the word that you heard
It's got a groove, it's got a meaning
Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion
Grease is the way we are feeling

Grease is the word, is the word, is the word

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees's song "Grease Theme" is an anthem to individuality and following one's heart. The song begins with the singer claiming to have seen his problems and found the light, indicating that he has gained a new perspective and is ready to take control of his life. He and his partner have a strong love and they need to nurture it properly. Despite the doubts and disbelief of others, they have to continue believing in themselves and the power of their love. The title phrase "grease is the word" is used to represent the feeling of confidence and authenticity that comes from being true to oneself.

The lyrics suggest breaking away from conventional standards and expectations, as they belong to yesterday. The singer recognizes that adhering to conventional norms only hold him back and that it's necessary to reject them to achieve success. There's a message of embracing individuality and avoiding being limited by the restrictions and negativity of others. The overall theme of the song is to follow one's heart, no matter the opinions of others, and to live one's life in a way that brings happiness.

I love how they pay tribute to Frankie Valli's version by playing one verse from his recording for the movie. The Bee Gees are such a class act, it's too bad they never really got the recognition they deserved and were labeled as just a disco group. They were so much more.

Hellwyck

Are you having a laugh? The BeeGees are one of the most respected and recognised groups in the world, not only for their music but for the music they wrote for other people!

Shannon

@Hellwyck By people who know music, yes. To the average person they are looked at as a disco group and nothing more.

Shannon same with The Beach Boys - people think they are only surf music.
