Living In Chicago
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If your mind is in the darkness, could you know
If it suits you to be fast or far too slow
Will you show me someone who may treat me kind
Or is this world I live in just a frame of mind

And as soon as you discover where you're goin'
Can I walk along the way, along the way
I'm lonesome and I need somebody knowin'
Just a few nice words to get me through the day

If your mind is in the darkness, could you know
If it suits you to be fast or far too slow
And will you show me someone who may treat me kind
Or is this world just a frame of mind

If you're living in Chicago, it's your home
If you're living in Chicago, you're alone

If you're living in Chicago, it's your home
If you're living in Chicago, you're alone

If you're living in Chicago, you're alone [Repeat: x4]
If you're living in Chicago, it's your home

Overall Meaning

The Bee Gees' song "Living In Chicago" explores the theme of loneliness and disconnection in a big city. The opening lines pose a rhetorical question, suggesting that it is impossible to know oneself when one's mind is shrouded in darkness. The song goes on to ask whether it is better to move quickly or take one's time, and pleads for someone kind who can offer a brief respite from the isolation of city living. The repeated refrain, "If you're living in Chicago, it's your home, if you're living in Chicago, you're alone," drives home the sense of alienation in a bustling city, suggesting that one can feel more isolated when surrounded by millions of people than living alone in a quiet countryside.

The song's lyrics reflect the band's own experience of living in the Windy City during their North American tour in 1975. They found the city challenging to live in and reportedly felt very lonely there. It is interesting to note that despite being known for their disco hits, "Living In Chicago" has a more traditional rock sound, featuring electric guitars, drums, and organ.

Interestingly, "Living In Chicago" was a B-side to the Bee Gees' hit single "Nights On Broadway." Despite this, the song has become something of a cult classic among fans of the band. It has been covered by a number of other artists, including Michael Des Barres and Billy Sherwood.
