Massachusetts
Bee Gees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Feel I'm goin' back to Massachusetts
Something's telling me I must go home
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
The day I left her standing on her own

Tried to hitch a ride to San Francisco
Gotta do the things I wanna do
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
They brought me back to see my way with you

Talk about the life in Massachusetts
Speak about the people I have seen
And the lights all went out in Massachusetts
And Massachusetts is one place I have seen

I will remember Massachusetts

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bee Gees' song Massachusetts seem to touch on the idea of going back home, of nostalgia and reminiscing over the people and places that make up our past. The first line "Feel I'm goin' back to Massachusetts" could mean that the singer is feeling a pull towards his hometown, a longing for the familiar that we all experience at some point in life. The line "Something's telling me I must go home" emphasizes the idea of a deeper intuition or instinct that guides us towards where we belong, no matter where we are in the world.

The second line "And the lights all went out in Massachusetts" suggests that something has changed since the singer was last in Massachusetts. The idea of lights turning off or going out suggests a loss or absence of something important, something that was once shining bright. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for the lost opportunities, relationships, or experiences that we leave behind as we venture out into the world. The third line "The day I left her standing on her own" indicates that the singer may have left someone behind when he went off seeking his dreams - someone who was left alone to deal with the darkness that surrounded them.

In the next verse, the singer talks about trying to hitch a ride to San Francisco, highlighting his desire to pursue his own goals and dreams. Despite his efforts, however, he is brought back to Massachusetts - perhaps suggesting that no matter how far away we may travel, our past will always play a role in shaping our present and future. The reference to "seeing his way with you" is unclear, but may suggest that the singer has found a way back to someone he cared for in Massachusetts.

Overall, the song seems to be an ode to the idea of home and the longing we feel for it even when we are far away. It touches on themes of loss, change, and the passage of time, all of which are universal human experiences. The lyrics are simple yet emotive, and the iconic melody and harmonies of the Bee Gees elevate the song to a timeless classic.

Sometimes it makes me sad knowing that young people today will NEVER know how great our music was! The Bee Gees were simply a gift from God. Imagine three (actually 4) brothers with PERFECT Voices and songwriting ability. We will never have this again.

@josephleonard6695

it makes me sad that we might never get another group like them 🥺

I am 76, today actually, and I can honestly not say I have heard a song in a long time that can compare with Anything from the 60s-80s. Maybe I'm not listening in the right places.
