1) Beeches… Read Full Bio ↴There might be more than one artist with the name Beeches
1) Beeches is a lilting indie-folk outfit comprising singer-songwriter Luke Thompson and producer/Shakes frontman Alex Price.
2) March 2004 was an important date in the history of music. It was the month when beeches were born and first spent three hours together in a fire-hazard death-trap of a practice room. The rhythm section were tight and knew what they were doing with their bass and drums. The booze section were loose but knew which off licence had the best deal of 8 cans for £5.
The band born that day haven't changed... apart from the line-up, the name and the arrangements of several songs.
After a year or so of working in the practice room, the band knew the time was right to take the songs to the people and play a gig. The Lonely Planet guide to Britain, the London Tourist Board nor the official capital bus tour make no mention of the fact, but on April 29th 2005 the Bull and Gate of Kentish town gave permission for a four piece called beeches to play out their view of the way of the world for 17 and a half minutes.
"I thought you were drunk" "You've got some strange ideas" and "XYZ" were comments thrown their way by other bands on the bill. With these endorsements ringing in their ears and buoyed by the success of the gig, the band did nothing together for a couple of months. When they did meet tho it seemed they'd forgotten most of the songs and each others names.
This collective dementia was only temporary and the music was re-born with a greater energy and purpose than ever before. With only a shoddy live recording to their names and some crappy minidiscs taken from various practices, the four of them decided, for the sake of posterity, to record their songs properly - in the studio. Owing money to various guitar collectors, the slippered Steve Honest took on the job of committing 9 Beeches songs to compact disc.
The evenings of the ninth month of 2005 - renamed Beechtember - were happily spent at the Honest ones' playboy penthouse recording the music that has, so far, brought so much happiness to so few (45 and counting). With "Then We're Agreed" completed, the band played their second gig at the Bull and Gate. Despite three guitars combusting, a bassist collapsing and a drummer cursing the kit, they still rocked.
Since then Neil, Andy, Tom and Kev have gone from strength to strength playing a shed load of gigs in 2006 and 2007 (including a festival in Weymouth and to a room of confused looking Germans in Munich).
The band could have broken up and dissolved when Neil went on a spiritual journey (read: trying to avoid work) to South America for 6 months. However, on his return the 4 beeches are back together trying to remember how all the songs go and what the words are.
Fate conspired to throw these four people together, whereas Destiny hasn't picked the red carpet up from the dry cleaners...but she will, oh yes...well, she might.
We Don't Know
Beeches Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We can can run and we can sing
We don't talk about the things
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
Listening to some distant song
Trying to figure out just what
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
Like a whisper on the sea
Is the fatherless in me
And all I want is to believe
What we don't know
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
We don't know
In "We Don't Know," Beeches presents a compelling commentary on human nature and knowledge. They start by saying that they don't follow any kings, which is a declaration that they don't abide by any particular ideology or way of thinking. They simply seek to be free and authentic in their behavior. They also mention that they can run and sing, which is a reference to their ability to move through life with joy and passion.
The chorus of the song is a clear statement that there are many things that we as humans don't know. Despite all of our attempts to understand the world around us, there will always be an element of mystery and uncertainty. This can be both humbling and empowering, as it reminds us that there is always more to learn and discover.
In the second verse, the band references their journey through life and their attempt to make sense of it all. They acknowledge that they have been searching for answers for a long time, but there is still much that remains unknown. The repetition of the phrase "we don't know" emphasizes the vastness of what we don't understand and our need to continue seeking new knowledge.
The final verse is perhaps the most poignant, as it touches on the idea of personal identity and the search for meaning in life. The line "like a whisper on the sea is the fatherless in me" speaks to the idea that we all carry within us a sense of loss, loneliness, and longing that shapes who we are. And yet, despite the challenges we face, all we really want is to believe in something greater than ourselves - something that can help us make sense of the world and our place in it.
Overall, "We Don't Know" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that speaks to the human experience in a way that is both honest and inspiring.
