Beetle Juice Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day-o, day-o
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
Day is a day, is a day, is a day
Is a day, is a day-o
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
Work all night, gonna drink our rum
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
Stack banana till the morning come
(Till I come and me wanna go home)

Come mister tally man, tally me banana
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
Come mister tally man, tally me banana
(Till I come and me wanna go home)

Day ia a day-o
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
Day is a day, is a day, is a day
Is a day, is a day
(Till I come and me wanna go home)

A beautiful bunch, a ripe banana
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
I seek deadly lacked a launch-ra
(Till I come and me wanna go home)
(Repeat ** and *** then *)

Day-o, day-o
(Till I come and me wanna go home)

Day is a day, is a day, is a day
Is a day, is a day-o

Overall Meaning

The song “Day-o” also known as “The Banana Boat Song” by Beetle Juice presents Rick Maniac & Dr. Loop is a traditional Jamaican folk song that was made popular by Harry Belafonte in the 1950s. The song is about a group of workers who work all night to stack bananas until the morning comes. They are eagerly waiting for the tally man to come and take their bananas away so they can go home. The lyrics use repetition to showcase the monotony of the workers' job; they work all night stacking bananas, the days all seem the same.

The chorus of the song “Day-o, day-o (Till I come and me wanna go home), Day is a day, is a day, is a day, Is a day, is a day-o (Till I come and me wanna go home)” emphasizes their desire to go home after a long night of work. The workers are also described as preparing to drink rum once they are done with their work and the line “Stack banana ‘til the morning come” shows their dedication to their work.

In the second verse, the tally man is shouted out; the workers want him to come and tally their bananas so they can get their pay and finally go home. The song then returns to the chorus reiterating the theme of the workers' desire to go home.

Overall, the song “Day-o” represents the struggles of workers who must work long hours and do the same job every day and yet eagerly anticipate their return home.

Best part of the video (aside from the song, of course) is how the actors were all able to do the dance number while looking like they didn't WANT to be doing it-- since the ghosts were controlling them. That was probably difficult to do.

@johnny--guitar

Confused, terrified choreographed dance number
