As a full band from 1989 to 1993, they released a large amount of demos, a demo compilation CD named "The Oath of Black Blood" in 1991, and the album "Drawing Down the Moon" in 1993, both of which are considered classics of the style. Laiho, the group's frontman, would continue the band as a solo project after "Drawing Down the Moon" and released an EP called "Messe Des Mortes" 1993, as well as two more albums under the band's name. These albums, H418ov21.C from 1994 and Electric Doom Synthesis from 1995, were dubbed "ritual ambient" by the band. Much like the metal recordings from the band, these electronic releases have a cult following. After these albums were released, Beherit effectively ceased to exist, although Laiho would release another album of electronic material under the name Suri Shamaani in 1999.
Original members Nuclear Holocausto and Sodomatic Slaughter reformed the band in 2008, now a four-piece featuring new members Ancient Corpse Desekrator and Abyss. With this new lineup the album Engram would be released in 2009, which is largely considered a return to form to the band's metal era. In 2011, a recording for what the band had planned to release as a debut in 1990 would be unearthed and released as "At the Devil's Studio 1990", and this would be followed up with the "Celebrate the Dead" EP in 2012.
In 2020, Beherit would return with a new album, Bardo Exist. This album was a radical departure from Engram's sound, having returned to an electronic sound much like the band had created as Laiho's solo vehicle in the mid-90s.
Metal of Death
Beherit Lyrics

(repeat)
Beherit's "Metal of Death" is an intense and visceral ode to the power and glory of heavy metal music. The repeated refrain of "Metal of Death" serves as a rallying cry for all who appreciate the sonic assault of heavy guitars, pounding drums, and screeching vocals. The song seems to celebrate the outsider, non-conformist culture of the metal genre, rejecting mainstream trends and society's expectations in favor of a darker, more rebellious path.
Throughout the song, the lyrics are filled with imagery of blood, fire, and death, adding to the sense of danger and heightened emotions that metal often invokes. The chorus itself is a thrilling, almost primal chant, calling out to all who are willing to embrace the power of metal and surrender to its intense, hypnotic pull. Overall, "Metal of Death" is a fitting tribute to the intense and immersive experience of heavy metal music, capturing the rebellious and impassioned spirit of the genre in its explosive, unrelenting sound.

I was 13 when I discovered Venom. I'm almost 50 & love black metal more every day. So, youngsters wondering if this taste ages well: it certainly did for me.

Chris Ferrell Always encouraging to hear from the older dudes. Do people still think you're in a "phase" almost 40 years later?
Forgoat USBM
@Stench Trench of those who thought that when I was a kid, it's hard to say, as most of them are dead, lol.
Atavism Dream
@Forgoat USBM Have you discovered any high-quality material that's generally overlooked?
Forgoat USBM
@Atavism Dream I know of no well-kept secrets, but I do believe Forgotten Woods & Moonblood should be included in more discussions regarding the all-time greats.

I just turned 45 last May and I have been listening black metal since I was 14/15 years old. It is not a "phase". As you get older you truly learn to embrace it and understand it better. Beherit, early Samael, Varathron, Impaled Nazarene, Blasphemy, Mistifyer, Sarcofago, Master's Hammer etc are among my favorite bands.
