Elephant Gun
Beirut Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I was young, I'd flee this town
I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight

Far from home, elephant gun
Let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around
Let the seasons begin, it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin, take the big king down

Let the seasons begin, it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin, take the big king down

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the night

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the silence, all that is left is all that I hide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beirut's song "Elephant Gun" tells a story of a person who wanted to escape from their town and bury their dreams. The first part of the song talks about drinking to forget, which shows escapism. The singer is far from home carrying an "elephant gun." An elephant gun is a type of large caliber gun that is used to hunt elephants or other large game. The song then goes on to talk about taking down "the big king," which could symbolize taking down any oppressor or obstacle that is in the way. The repetition of the line "let the seasons begin" suggests that time keeps moving forward despite the struggles and challenges faced by the singer.

The next part of the song is a powerful one, as it talks about the sound of the gun echoing through the night. The silence is broken, and all that is left is what the singer is hiding. This could refer to their fears and innermost desires. The song concludes with the repetition of the phrase "and it rips through the silence," leaving the listener with a powerful image of the sound of the gun echoing through the night.

Você me amou, eu te amei.

Você me amou. Foi bom. Como sempre, foi bom.

Nos despedimos. Eu quebrei nosso CD. Você foi embora.

1 ano passou.

Recolhi todos os meus cacos. Encontrei outra pessoa.

Você me ligou. Você estava livre. Eu não estava mais. Você me pediu desculpas. Eu chorei.

Do nosso amor. Desse tempo que não volta mais.

The comment section of an American Music Video from the early days of youtube has found new life thanks to Portuguese speakers taking an interest in a wonderful song. It's a beautiful thing how music can cross borders and languages.

This song was the theme of Capitu, a very famous character in Brazilian literary culture, about whom a TV series was made a decade ago.

Fica a ideia pra ti, caso seja dessa área.
