Blank Sheets
Bel Canto Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When we're discovering lies
Our pride will be in vain
Now, recirculate your thoughts
Make them new again
Well, do you know where to start
And do you see the end
You're swallowing books
This is just like the last
And you're wasting your time
In searching for your past
Well, do you know where to start
And do you see the end

And when we return
We are all ashamed
Because the promises of life
We'll never forget
And all that you say
Discloses what we are
We know our sheets will always
Maintain blank

When do you hide in your dreams
Do you look behind
Play around with the truth
Constructed in your mind
Well, do you know where to start
And do you see the end

And when we return
We are all ashamed
Because the promises of life
We'll never forget
And all that you say
Discloses what we are

We know our sheets will always
Maintain blank

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bel Canto's song Blank Sheets capture the idea of self-discovery and the futility of searching for answers through external sources. The first verse talks about how discovering lies and illusions that we have been living with only leads to misplaced pride. The second verse suggests that the search for answers should start internally, through the recirculation of one's own thoughts, rather than through books, which only offer false hope.

The chorus talks about the shame that comes with realizing that the promises of life are unfulfilled and that our own disclosures reveal our true selves. Finally, the lyrics end with the idea that one's own blank character, with no lies or illusions, is the only thing that stays constant.

Overall, this song encourages a deep introspection of one's own thoughts and dissects the meaning of self-discovery, disillusionment, and authenticity.

Oh, my God!!!!!!!!!! This is very precious!
BEL CANTO is my favorite band for a long time.
Thank you for this!

@Francis Broka I just listened to "Shimmering" again for the first time in years, and I actually like it more than I used to. But still "nope" to the later pop/world stuff. Yes about CT; "Treasure" is perfection; I never get tired of it. (Although CT themselves called it an unfinished abortion ...) Have you heard of Hex? Another of my favourites of the time. Start with "Diviner" and "Ethereal Message" off their self-titled album, which isn't on YT in its entirety, but oblivicon7 has all the tracks: Diviner/Hermaphrodite/Ethereal Message/Mercury Towers/Out of the Pink Sky/Fire Island/In the Net/Silvermine/Elizabeth Green/An Arrangement.

@RB 70 Yes, all right, we are on the same wavelength. And Anneli Drecker solo, it's not very exciting either, from my point of view. Cocteau Twins, on the other hand, did not release the superfluous album! ;-)

@Francis Broka I'm with you. This and Birds of Passage are fantastic. Shimmering, Warm and Bright ... some good parts. Then - blugh. Happens to a lot of bands, unfortunately: they start out really creative and interesting, then turn pop and boring.

I really liked the first two albums, but when Geir Jenssen left and they turned to world music, I was really disappointed.

A peculiar video! Loved this, Ah Bel Canto, I trying to understand why I have 22 years, and why I discovered this group, but the messages is pursuing my mind, thanks for exists!
Good album, good group, celestial lyrics and music. I send greetings from Brazil to Great Norway, land of the warriors!
