Rush
Bel Canto Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Through the night the dark blue men came far across the starry sea,
From Foreverland to Eternity.
Rushed, rushed, rushed to the hill.
There they would engrave the Oracle up on the hill that
'Oh, we are the resurrected and how we are, we are'.
We are... Rush, rush, rush to the hill.

Bring the children.
Bring their mothers.
Bring the cattle.
Bring the water.

Rush, hurry now, hurry now up the hill.
Now! Far-descending guests,
Let us wander, wander up on the blue mountain.

Bring the babies.
Bring the homeless.
Bring your treasures.
Bring your lovers.

Rush and see it written there that 'how we are, we are'
We are... Rush, rush, rush to the hill.
Rush, rush, rush to the hill.
Do you understand me?

Do you understand me now?
Rush!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Rush" by Bel Canto are mystical and cryptic, leaving the listener wondering about their meaning. It begins with a portrayal of dark blue men who are coming from "Foreverland" to "Eternity" far across the starry sea. They rush towards a hill where they want to engrave an oracle that declares their resurrection and existence. The call for bringing everyone and everything, be it children, mothers, cattle, water, babies, homeless, treasures, or lovers. The invitation is to hurry up the hill and witness the oracle that states: "how we are, we are." The song ends with the repeated call to rush.

The lyrics suggest a ritualistic or religious ceremony, where the resurrected beings are establishing their identity through an oracle that they will engrave on top of a hill. The call to bring everything and everyone may also reflect the notion of inclusivity and that everyone and everything has a place and purpose. The repetition of the word "rush" adds a sense of urgency and perpetuates the theme of haste and intentionality.

The interpretation of the lyrics could have multiple dimensions or layers. It may be understood as a metaphorical representation of individuals, groups, or communities that establish their identity through a ceremony. It could also reflect the desperation, hope, or yearning for something greater than oneself. However, the real meaning behind the lyrics remains ambiguous and open-ended, leaving it to individual interpretation.

There are many mysteries in the world of contemporary music, but the greatest in my opinion is why Bel Canto has faded into near obscurity. This incredible cut---'Rush'---speaks to my point beautifully. 'Rush' was released in 1998 but sounds as if it could have been released in 2012. There must an audience in Europe and in the U.S. for this kind of truly 'world' music. Drecker and Johansen are still in their 40's and must have more great music in them...if their audience will reach out to them.

Bel Canto still exists with Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen as permanent members and percussionist Andreas Eriksen as a third member. Both Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen makes music projects next to keep the Bel Canto; Drecker with frequent solo projects and collaborations with other artists and art institutions (theater / film) and Nils Johansen, through its membership in the group Vajas.

HooVooLoo Bloo

Bel Canto is the Pink Floyd of Scandanavia.  Anneli and her troupe are not getting their fair shake in popular media streams.  How to change this?  Hmm.  You peeps out there know how.  Hep to it!
