The Band was founded together with Geir Jenssen. He left after the second album in 1990 and pursued a solo career in ambient music as Biosphere.
During the years from 1985 to present (2006) Bel Canto have been taking breaks as Anneli Drecker has pursued a solo career and done concerts with other bands and artists (including touring with A-Ha), as well as playing in films and theatre plays. Nils Johansen, on the other hand, has composed music for film and television as well as working and performing with his other band, Vajas.
21 Years after the band was founded they are still active. In the fall of 2006 they continued to do concerts, primarily in Norway.
In 2007 Bel Canto will continue to work together, both by writing new material and by doing more gigs. At the same time both Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen will also work on other projects. Latest update by 2022 is that Bel Canto are currently working on their next album.

He tried to flee and measure out the view from his braincloud
But the higher he climbed, the more they dragged him down
He loved to sing
He didn't dare to talk
He loved to sing but he didn't dare to talk
Struggled for a lifetime to wake up and understand
Steady on, sleepwalker
Steady on, sleepwalker
There's so much more than this I swear
There's so much more than this
Would you care?
Know that someone like this could have been spared
Life's worth more than this, I swear
The longer you let it wait it'll catch you up, you up
Whenever you walk away, it'll catch you up, you up
If you do ignore their fates, it'll catch you up, you up
The consequenses of foul play is that it'll catch you up, see?
Boy, it's got to stop, to stop!
Boy, it's got to stop, to stop! S.T.O.P
Steady on, sleepwalker
Steady on, sleepwalker
Sleepwalker
There's so much more than this I swear
Life's worth more than this
Would you care?
No, that someone like this should have been there
Know there's more love to life than this
The longer you hesitate, it'll catch you up, you up
Whenever you look away, it'll catch you up, you up
Don't watch their lives drift away
It'll catch you up, you up
No, the consequences of foul play is that it'll catch you up, see?
Steady on
Steady on

Bel Canto's song Sleepwalker is a hauntingly beautiful piece that speaks of different struggles that people may face in their lives. The lyrics paint a picture of a man who is lost in his thoughts and memories, represented by the "walls of mist" that seem to trap him. He tries to escape and "measure out the view from his braincloud," but the harder he tries to climb out, the harder he falls back down.
The man in question is Grandpa, who loved to sing but was too afraid to talk. His inability to verbalize his feelings and thoughts is symbolized by his entrapment in the mist. The second verse shifts focus to a woman who has been injected with poison. She struggles to understand what has happened to her but perseveres, despite the obstacles in her path. The repetition of "Steady on, sleepwalker" serves as a reminder to keep moving forward, to not give up even in the face of hardship.
The song's lyrics are a call to action, urging people to take notice of those around them and to not let life slip away. The consequences of neglecting the plight of others are dire, as the repeated refrain of "it'll catch you up, you up" suggests. Ultimately, Sleepwalker is a powerful reminder to live life to the fullest and cherish those around us.
