The Band was founded together with Geir Jenssen. He left after the second album in 1990 and pursued a solo career in ambient music as Biosphere.
During the years from 1985 to present (2006) Bel Canto have been taking breaks as Anneli Drecker has pursued a solo career and done concerts with other bands and artists (including touring with A-Ha), as well as playing in films and theatre plays. Nils Johansen, on the other hand, has composed music for film and television as well as working and performing with his other band, Vajas.
21 Years after the band was founded they are still active. In the fall of 2006 they continued to do concerts, primarily in Norway.
In 2007 Bel Canto will continue to work together, both by writing new material and by doing more gigs. At the same time both Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen will also work on other projects. Latest update by 2022 is that Bel Canto are currently working on their next album.

Bel Canto Lyrics

Time showed no mercy
Until a man in grey gave her
Doses of a sweet poision
She got hoodooed, voodooed
She finally got released
She stirred huge cauldrons
With toads and henbane and...
Hotchpotch for haunted lusts
Spiderdust, spiderdust!
Hotchpotch for the evil-eyed
Spiderdust, spiderdust!
Hotchpotch for spellbound lusts
Spiderdust, spiderdust!
Hotchpotch for the demonized...
She got voodooed, hoodooed
She got finally redeemed
She stirred huge cauldrons
With toads and henbane and...
She bred toads
She got burnt
Bel Canto's 'Spiderdust' describes a woman who has been living in limbo and is then given doses of a sweet poison by a man in grey. This poison causes her to become hoodooed and voodooed, and she finally experiences release. She begins stirring enormous cauldrons with toads and henbane, creating a hotchpotch for haunted lusts, evil-eyed individuals, spellbound lusts, and the demonized. Throughout the song, there is a sense of both danger and liberation, as the woman's life is transformed from one of oppression to one of power.
The lyrics of 'Spiderdust' are open to multiple interpretations. The most apparent interpretation is that it is about a woman coming into her magical powers after being held captive in a state of limbo. The man in grey could represent a catalyst for change, and the sweet poison could represent the awakening of her abilities. The toads and henbane might be symbolic ingredients in a magical ritual, giving the woman more significant control over her life.
On another level, 'Spiderdust' can be seen as a comment on societal oppression, with the woman representing anyone who has been marginalized and held back by others. The use of the word 'finally' when she is released from her limbo suggests that her liberation is hard-won, which is a common experience for marginalized individuals. The hotchpotch she creates with her spells might represent the many different individuals coming together to fight against their oppressors.
Overall, 'Spiderdust' is a powerful and enigmatic song with lyrics that are ripe for interpretation.

I saw them in Atlanta before the Olympics... Some musical exchange thing, right? I'd never heard of them, but they were from Scandinavia and we were all extreme metalheads! I already had a handful tickets for me and my friends, but then won a call-in contest on "Album 88" while they were in the radio station studio, and asked if rather than more tix, if we could meet them backstage. They agreed.
That's the primer...
So here are me and my mates... 15 and 16, the lot of us... Downing some beers and smoking pot behind the Roxy and getting ready to shred, Norwegian style!!
We finish our private party and go inside. The music starts, but there's no screaming guitars... No deafening drums....
But the group of us are TRANSFIXED!!! Jaws dropped!!! Minds were blown!!! We wind up dancing down front... Probably looked like illiterate morons in a spelling bee... But had a life-altering and musically awakening event beyond comprehension.
When it was over, we went backstage, just for a few minutes of meet and greet...
I can't express how deeply, or on what level I mean when I say:
This lady and her voice has the undying love and admiration of a group of metalheads in America that will never... Ever.... EVER die! We all still listen to her in reverence today.
She is a lovely, lovely witch, and her voice is magic.
Watch out!

Wonderfully made video, solitudinarian. It is a slideshow that accentuates the content of the song rather than trying to put it in the dark. Sehr schön!
