White-out conditions
Bel Canto Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the light of my fire
I see footsteps in snow
In white-out conditions
My eyes have no view
In the light of my fire
I see grey sticks in snow
In white-out conditions
There's no trace of the track at all

A peak is blazed with the light from the moon
And there is no view in darkness
I search for the moonlight

In the light of my fire
I see cornice on stones
In white-out conditions
There's no further view
In the light of my fire
I see grey flakes of snow
There is no sign of life here at all

A peak is blazed with the light from the moon

And there is no view in darkness
I search for the moonlight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "White-out Conditions" by Bel Canto contain vivid imagery of a person trying to navigate through a snowstorm. The song is a reflection on the feeling of isolation and disorientation that can come with being alone in harsh winter conditions. The opening lines, "In the light of my fire, I see footsteps in snow," suggest that the singer is trying to follow tracks left by others or maybe themselves to get where they are to safety. The line "In white-out conditions, my eyes have no view," emphasizes the difficulty of seeing anything beyond the immediate surroundings in a heavy snowstorm. The line "I see grey sticks in snow" and "I see cornice on stones" depict objects that offer some form of natural structure, but the singer is still lost in a featureless, white landscape.

As the song progresses, another theme emerges - the search for light or guidance in the darkness. The repeated line "I search for the moonlight" suggests that the singer is seeking something to help them find their way. However, as the line "And there is no view in darkness" suggests that this search might ultimately be fruitless.

One of the most beautiful and intriguing debut albums in the 80s, released in 1987 by the Nordic cold-wave band – Ben Canto. We can find here solid dream-pop songs (“Blank Sheets”, “Dreaming Girl”), emotional ballad (“Without you”), instrumental experiments (“Agassiz”, “Kloeberdanz”, “Chaideinoi”), and a few pearls inspired by Norwegian folklore or the rough climate of the Arctic Circle (“White-Out Conditions”, “Baltic Ice-Breaker”, astonishing “Upland”). Timeless music. Highly recommended.

This was the album I couldn't find the last decade. Been looking for it online and offline, it was just a coincidence that brought me here a couple of weeks ago. Thanks, you've got really no idea what this music means to me! Keep up the good work! There's so much music that never got on the internet because there's no commercial interest.
