I think the scripts never lived up to his talents, but in every movie he was in, no matter how cheesy, he stole the show and made everyone so happy to see him.

We are very lucky to have such films as Dracula (#1) where his talent remains unsurpassed by any other horror actors & never emulated by any other Dracula players. He was brilliant & versatile in The Black Cat, his best performance IMHO after Dracula. His delightful comedic talent is well showcased in Broadminded. Impossibly charismatic as well in The Silent Command (silent 1923 film which I highly recommend).

Too many notable films to mention where Bela Lugosi shines & eclipses everyone else, but also The Raven, White Zombie, The Return of the Vampire, Invisible Ghost, Ghost of Frankenstein and many more. I'd say these far surpass Son of Frankenstein which "critics" (aka clueless snobs) tout as his 'best performance". I contend they mustn't have seen any of the above! <G> At any rate, even when Bela Lugosi graced a turkey, the turkey was elevated by his mere presence and dignified by his class. There was no other one on his level. No one compares. No one.

It ought to be noted that this entire interview is scripted and staged, as is (somewhat) revealed at the end, with Bela's joke. Hard to say what is true (the lone wolf?) & what is made up. I surmise that it may very well have been dictated by studios, to continue Bela Lugosi's enigmatic persona & image. The studio system of the era would fabricate a persona for their biggest stars, give them a fictitious background to give them a mystique and endear them to the public & sell magazines, then the press would publish the lies, the public none the wiser. Amusing now but at the time, the fans were clueless.

The 1937 Janet Gaynor film does touch at that. ("A Star Is Born") They used to publish in the press that Bela lived in a gothic manor and slept all day in a coffin. Amusing? To us fans, perhaps. Amusing to the stars, perhaps not: indeed, not so amusing for the many stars who were thus isolated by the fabrications that they were contracted to keep up. It alienated many from their public. They had no choice but to keep up the charade, and remember the lies, and keep on lying to their public and the press. At any rate, a very charming interview and a delight to watch. Well, Bela is pretending to have ultrasonic hearing, like animals, to hear stuff in a frequency that normal humans can't hear. So he's basically pretending to have supernatural hearing, which the joke is meant to have us believe he's supernatural, like his vampire characters, and he's hearing & responding to something or someone who would be invisible, perhaps in another dimension. He's also changed to being a bit stern, indicating that he's dangerous. The lady interviewing him pretends to believe it, and she pretends to freak out realizing he's a beast or a vampire (or just nuts) etc. and so she runs away so he doesn't hurt her. Upon which, the script thankfully called for Bela to let the viewers in on the joke, by laughing at his mischief. So cute! :o)

I say "thankfully" because there's unfortunately a lot of lies out there spread about Bela Lugosi that would have you believe he seriously claimed in real life "I am Dracula". I have no doubt he said it, but I'm also convinced it's taken out of context. ("I am the one who portrayed Dracula", "I am Dracula... in the 1931 film" etc. but they mean it to say that he was deranged). So they maliciously spread those rumors, claiming he was this, that and the other.

To this day, there's sadly a lot of haters (particularly old coots and published biographers, who are actually fans of the other actor) and who fabricate lies as if they'd been there to witness the nonsense they make up; they post the lies online, gossip amongst themselves etc. to try and portray Bela in a negative light to elevate their favorite, make their sordid lives and pathetic selves feel better because they view them as rivals. They weren't. But there's a notorious forum out there where the mod indulges all that. It's really sick and pathetic! Some fans of that other actor are actually lovely but there's the deranged ones who think they're all that because their publisher friends published their sordid books. Many even appear in Bela documentaries, so please do not believe everything you hear when it's meant maliciously. We live in a very sick world!

That's why I posted the explanation above. I know that 90% of viewers would get the joke, but for those, like you, who missed it, I wanted to make sure people knew it was dictated by the studios and did not stem from him or from egomania. :) Sorry I made this so long but thanks for asking.
