California
Belinda Carlisle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember I was in the tanning salon
When I heard that River Phoenix was gone
They say that only the good die young
But that ain't true where I come from
California, California

It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away, LA
From the sharks and the Chardonnay
In California, California

Four in the morning we were in our beds
The swaying palm trees above our heads
Woke up to a primal rumbling sound
When the Northridge quake ripped open the ground
California, California

It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away LA
from the sharks and the Chardonnay
In California, in California

Golden State, I'm back in the Golden State
Golden State of mind
Golden State, I'm back In the Golden State
Golden State of mind

It took a lot for me to say
I want to walk away LA
From the sharks and the Chardonnay
In California, in California
Walk, walk away

I remember I was in the tanning salon
When I heard that River Phoenix was gone

Overall Meaning

Belinda Carlisle’s song “California” is an ode to her home state of California. It speaks about the good and bad experiences she has had in the state, the memories she has created there, and her return after being away for some time.

The first verse mentions hearing about River Phoenix's death while at a tanning salon. Phoenix was a well-known actor who passed away in 1993 due to a drug overdose. This line shows the suddenness and tragedy of death, even for someone young and famous. Belinda then challenges the adage "only the good die young," stating that it is not true where she comes from. The chorus mentions California, indicating that although tragedy can happen, it does not take away from the beauty of the state.

The second verse talks about being in bed at four in the morning, feeling the earth shaking under them during the Northridge earthquake. This event emphasizes the unpredictability of natural disasters that can happen in California. However, despite these challenges, Belinda chooses to return to her home state because it holds a special place in her heart, noted in the lyrics “Golden State, I’m back in the Golden State, Golden State of mind.” She wants to break away from the negative experiences, such as dealing with sharks, and instead focus on the positive parts of California.

She has such an iconic and characteristic voice - Belinda forever! Man, I had a crush on her in the early nineties!

I live in Texas and so many Californians moving here, leaving CA. This song really seems appropriate now.
