Wishing Well
Bell Maggie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take off your hat, kick off your shoes
I know you ain't goin' anywhere
Run 'round the town singin' your blues
I know you ain't goin' anywhere.

You've always been a good, good friend of mine,
But you're always sayin' "Farewell"
And the only time that you're satisfied
Is when you dream from the wishing well.

Throw down your gun you might shoot yourself.
Or is that what you're tryin' to do?
Put up a fight you believe to be right
Someday the sun will shine through.

You've always been a good, good friend of mine,
But you're always sayin' "Farewell"
And the only time you're satisfied
Is when you dream, dream from the wishing well.

And I know what you're wishing for
Love in a peaceful world
Love in a peaceful world
Love in a peaceful world

You've always been a good, good, good friend of mine,
But you're always sayin' "Farewell"

And the only time that you're satisfied
Is with your feet in the wishing well.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Wishing Well" by Bell Maggie describe a person who seems to be in a constant state of dissatisfaction with their life. The singer urges them to take a break from their worries and to stop moving around, singing sad blues songs in town, and to realize that they are not going anywhere, despite their constant farewell. The person is told to throw away their gun, which could be an allusion to suicide. They are encouraged to stand up for what they believe in and to hope for a better future. The singer knows what the person is wishing for, that is, love in a peaceful world.

The song, therefore, seems to be a critique of those who are constantly searching for something better in life, even if they are not sure what that something is. The title "Wishing Well" is a metaphor for the idea that people often believe that their wishes will come true as long as they toss a coin into a well or make a wish on a star. While this might seem like an innocent act, the singer seems to suggest that wishing alone will not bring about change. Instead, they argue that people need to take action to make their wishes come true.

Jennie Woods-Glue Yes Jennie "The Free" were an amazing band of which Paul Rodgers was a member and together with Jimmy Page formed the band "The Firm"  in 1984. I know Maggie was in a band Called "Power" which was changed to "Stone The Crows" and when that fell apart Jimmy helped her with her second album "Suicide Sal"
