JUST THE WAY YOU ARE
Bellas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining
Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her tryin'
She's so beautiful
And I tell her everyday

Uh, uh, I was thinkin' bout her, thinkin' bout me, thinkin' bout us, who we gonna be
(I know, I know, when I compliment her she won't believe me)
Opened my eyes, and it was only just a dream
(It's so, it's so, sad to think that she can't see what I see)
(But every time she asks me "do I look okay, you know I'll say)
It was only just a dream

When I see your face
(So I traveled back down that road will she come back, no one knows)
There's not a thing that I would change, cause you're amazing, just the way you are
(I realized, it was only just a dream, it was only just a dream)

When I see your face
(So I traveled back down that road will she come back, no one knows)
There's not a thing that I would change, Cause you're amazing, just the way you are
(I realized, it was only just a dream, it was only just a dream)

When I see your face

Overall Meaning

The song "Just The Way You Are/Just A Dream" is a combination of two songs by Bruno Mars and Nelly, respectively, performed by Bella in the movie Pitch Perfect. The first verse talks about how the girl he loves is beautiful in every way and he tells her every day. Her eyes and hair catch his attention and he admires her without trying. It goes on to talk about how he thinks about their future together and compliments her, but she doesn't believe him. Eventually, he realizes that it was all just a dream and that he was thinking about a version of them that may not exist.

The chorus sings about how when he sees her face, there's nothing that he would change because she is already amazing just as she is. He travels back down the road in his mind, wondering if she'll come back, but ultimately realizing that it was only a dream. The repetition of the phrase "it was only just a dream" metaphorically represents his feelings and desires being unrealized and how he's come to accept that fact.

The song touches upon the universal and timeless theme of unrequited love and dreaming of a future with someone that may not exist. It's relatable to everyone because they've all had a version of this in their lives. The song also emphasizes the importance of accepting and loving oneself because no one is perfect — not even the person you're dreaming of. The last line, "When I see your face," symbolizes how seeing the person he loves is both the cause of his dream and the eventual acceptance of reality.
