1) Belle Epoque (also… Read Full Bio ↴There are several artists called Belle Epoque:
1) Belle Epoque (also referenced in some sources as La Belle Epoque) was the name of a female vocal trio, based in Paris, France. The group first rose to popularity during the mid to late 1970s with a disco remake of the song, “Black Is Black”, originally a hit in 1966 for the Spanish group Los Bravos.
Belle Epoque consisted of lead singer Evelyne Lenton and two back-up singers.
Originally, the back-up singers were Jusy Fortes (also known as Judy Lisboa), originating from Cape Verde, and Marcia Briscoe (also known as Marcia Briscue), hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. However, over time, as Lenton notes, “The girls kept changing with the circumstances.”
The trio scored a major European hit in 1977 with their discofied remake of “Black Is Black”, sometimes also known as “Disco Sound/Black Is Black”. The Belle Epoque version was a top ten hit in many European countries, including number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.
In the U.S., Belle Epoque are better known for another song, “Miss Broadway”, which charted at number 26 on the U.S. R&B chart and at number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. “Miss Broadway” and “Black Is Black” both rose to number 21 on Billboard’s “National Disco Action Top 40” chart in summer 1977.
Other hits in continental Europe followed into the late 1970s. Lenton began recording solo again in 1983, although she has worked with contemporary music producers to craft remixes of “Black Is Black” and “Miss Broadway.”

I want my baby back
It's grey
it's grey
Since she went a-way o - o
What can I do
'Cause I
If I had my way
She'd be back today
But she don't intend
To see me a-gain o - o
What can I do
'Cause I
I'm feeling blue
I can't choose
It's too much to lose
My love's too strong
May be if she
Would come back to me
Then it can't go wrong
Black is black
. . .
What can I do
'Cause I
I'm feeling blue
'Cause I
I'm feeling blue
The song "Black Is Black" by Belle Epoque is a classic example of a heartbroken man left with nothing but loneliness, regret, and sorrow. The song starts with the lines "Black is black, I want my baby back, It's grey, It's grey since she went away." The use of colors to describe emotions is an effective way to depict the singer's feeling of despair. Black, being the color of melancholy and gloominess, represents his sadness, while grey, a combination of black and white, suggests his confusion and uncertainty following the breakup.
The chorus of the song is quite simple yet striking, with the same line repeated thrice; "What can I do, 'cause I'm feeling blue." The singer earnestly pleads for his lover to come back, but she has no intention of doing so. The verse "My love's too strong, maybe if she would come back to me, then it can't go wrong" suggests that the singer believes that his love can conquer all, and if his lover returns, things will be alright. The song ends with the singer still being "blue" and feeling helpless about his situation.
Overall, the song "Black Is Black" is a poignant reminder that love can bring immense pain and heartbreak, leaving an emptiness that seems impossible to fill.
