1) Belle Epoque (also… Read Full Bio ↴There are several artists called Belle Epoque:
1) Belle Epoque (also referenced in some sources as La Belle Epoque) was the name of a female vocal trio, based in Paris, France. The group first rose to popularity during the mid to late 1970s with a disco remake of the song, “Black Is Black”, originally a hit in 1966 for the Spanish group Los Bravos.
Belle Epoque consisted of lead singer Evelyne Lenton and two back-up singers.
Originally, the back-up singers were Jusy Fortes (also known as Judy Lisboa), originating from Cape Verde, and Marcia Briscoe (also known as Marcia Briscue), hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. However, over time, as Lenton notes, “The girls kept changing with the circumstances.”
The trio scored a major European hit in 1977 with their discofied remake of “Black Is Black”, sometimes also known as “Disco Sound/Black Is Black”. The Belle Epoque version was a top ten hit in many European countries, including number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.
In the U.S., Belle Epoque are better known for another song, “Miss Broadway”, which charted at number 26 on the U.S. R&B chart and at number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. “Miss Broadway” and “Black Is Black” both rose to number 21 on Billboard’s “National Disco Action Top 40” chart in summer 1977.
Other hits in continental Europe followed into the late 1970s. Lenton began recording solo again in 1983, although she has worked with contemporary music producers to craft remixes of “Black Is Black” and “Miss Broadway.”

Belle Epoque Lyrics

But somehow I know it's gonna affect my head
Wanna buy fine dresses and a fancy car
So I better go out looking for my lucky star !
Money buys
Money buys
You got caught in the nest by the underground
For fame and fortune you gave your body away
And you were forced in to action the next day
Money buys
Money buys
Your brother in the ghetto will soon realize
If he wants to break out, he'd better compromise
It only takes a smart guy to turn him loose
By making him the offer he can't refuse!
Hey miss Broadway
Hey miss Broadway
Money buys
Money buys
Buy your ticket for a square yard in the sun
Buy your right of livin' far from a gun
Watch out cause if you make a wrong deal you'll see how
It feels
You may miss out on your next meal...
Money buys
Money buys
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
The gambler won't get out before he's lost it all
The junkee always knows where to call
Hey, miss Broadway is your lover's money clean
You know what I mean ?
Where is his connection with the underground scene
So so so
Money buys
Money buys
Hey miss Broadway
Hey miss Broadway
Money buys
Money buys
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
Hum hum I like it hum hum I like it
The lyrics of Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway" tell a tale of seeking fortune and fame, but ultimately succumbing to the pitfalls of the underground scene. The singer expresses a desire for material possessions, such as fine dresses and a fancy car, and believes that getting a job is the way to attain them. However, they also acknowledge that the pursuit of money may have negative effects on their mental state. The chorus emphasizes the theme of money as the driving force behind these desires, repeating the phrase "money buys."
The song then shifts to focus on Miss Broadway, who has become caught up in the underground scene, sacrificing her body for fame and fortune. The singer warns of the dangers of such a path, reminding Miss Broadway that she may miss out on her next meal. The final verse touches on the idea that those in poverty, such as the singer's brother in the ghetto, may have to compromise their values in order to break out. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, driving home the message that money can buy many things, but often comes with a cost.
Overall, "Miss Broadway" is a commentary on the alluring yet ultimately destructive nature of fame and fortune, and the sacrifices often made in pursuit of them. It highlights the ways in which money can influence and manipulate individuals, leading them down dark paths.
