1) Belle Epoque (also… Read Full Bio ↴There are several artists called Belle Epoque:
1) Belle Epoque (also referenced in some sources as La Belle Epoque) was the name of a female vocal trio, based in Paris, France. The group first rose to popularity during the mid to late 1970s with a disco remake of the song, “Black Is Black”, originally a hit in 1966 for the Spanish group Los Bravos.
Belle Epoque consisted of lead singer Evelyne Lenton and two back-up singers.
Originally, the back-up singers were Jusy Fortes (also known as Judy Lisboa), originating from Cape Verde, and Marcia Briscoe (also known as Marcia Briscue), hailing from Atlanta, Georgia. However, over time, as Lenton notes, “The girls kept changing with the circumstances.”
The trio scored a major European hit in 1977 with their discofied remake of “Black Is Black”, sometimes also known as “Disco Sound/Black Is Black”. The Belle Epoque version was a top ten hit in many European countries, including number 2 in the UK Singles Chart.
In the U.S., Belle Epoque are better known for another song, “Miss Broadway”, which charted at number 26 on the U.S. R&B chart and at number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. “Miss Broadway” and “Black Is Black” both rose to number 21 on Billboard’s “National Disco Action Top 40” chart in summer 1977.
Other hits in continental Europe followed into the late 1970s. Lenton began recording solo again in 1983, although she has worked with contemporary music producers to craft remixes of “Black Is Black” and “Miss Broadway.”

Paradise Lost
Belle Epoque Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Patiently awaiting your arrival.
Turning into dogs we fight on cue,
Breaking all the rules.
Lessons learned,
We're contemplating
Breaking all the rules.
The lakes are freezing, it's turning into winter.
Cold hits the air again, now I'm left with nothing.
As tired as the iris, with a sense of fleeting.
Welcome back to the garden, back to beginning.
Feet are underpinning.
Unrewarded, all is haunted, in the garden.
Nights are long with tides.
Follow the road again
To the separation and separate from within.
There's a loss we've encompassed
And its drawing us to evil.
Destroy the enemy.
There's a thousand different ways to die,
But not now, not without a fight.
As I sleep in silence she takes a bite from my neck.
The lakes are freezing, it's turning into winter.
Cold hits the air again, now I'm left with nothing.
As tired as the iris, with a sense of fleeting.
Welcome back to the garden, back to beginning
This is where I started from,
This is where I seal my fate.
This is where I started from,
This is where is I end this game.
The lyrics of Belle Epoque's song Paradise Lost portray a sense of loss and ambiguity. The plea to step into the light may be interpreted as an invitation to enter a place of enlightenment, acceptance, and resolution. The idea of patiently waiting for someone to arrive is intriguing and may signify the hope to reconcile with someone or to discover something meaningful. However, turning into dogs and fighting may indicate that the journey towards the light is not easy, and one has to break the rules to achieve it.
The reference to the changing seasons, winter, and coldness conveys a sense of melancholy, weariness, and transience. The sense of fleeting in the first verse may apply to the sense of fragility and impermanence that characterizes life. 'Welcome back to the garden, back to beginning' may suggest the desire to return to a place of innocence or purity, where everything began. However, the reference to taking a bite from the neck and the mention of evil may allude to the overpowering force of temptation, and one's struggle to resist it.
