Imagination
Belouis Some Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She lit a cigarette, both hands behind her back
Thought she was hungry, lack of choice saw to that
Only you can try to see what I'm really like
She said, only you can understand the way I feel tonight
She blamed excesses on the 'merican dream
So seldom witnessed, never seen
Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah
Imagination, could make a man of you
Imagination, could make me love you too
Imagination, is all I want from you

She lost her virtue before she could write
I lost mine too, on my very first night with you
You'll have to guide me, these impossible schemes
You make me steal unstealable things
She blamed excesses on the 'merican dream
So seldom witnessed, never seen
Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah

Imagination, could make a man of you
Imagination, could make me love you too
Imagination, is all I want from you

And, she blamed excesses on the 'merican dream
So seldom witnessed, never seen
Hah, hah, hah, hah, hah

Imagination, could make a man of you
Imagination, could make me love you too
Imagination, is all I want from you

Overall Meaning

In the song "Imagination," Belouis Some presents a story about a woman who is smoking a cigarette behind her back, signaling something secretive or untoward. She is hungry, but her options are limited. She implies that no one else can understand her or see her true nature. She blames her excesses on the American dream, which she describes as being so seldom witnessed but never seen. The song continues, with the singer suggesting that imagination could make a man out of the listener and lead to him being loved.

The use of imagery and wordplay in this song is quite profound. The use of a person smoking a cigarette behind their back hints at something secretive, as if the woman knows something that she doesn't want to share. The line "Only you can understand the way I feel tonight" is intriguing because it means the woman knows the listener well enough to know that he can empathize with her.

The song's title, "Imagination," is also a major theme. In the chorus, the singer talks about how imagination could make a man out of the listener, but he also repeats the word over and over at the end of the song. This repetition emphasizes that imagination is everything to the singer and that it's the key to understanding her and the world around her.

Well, I was 19 when this song came out. Video was so controversial, but to me was piece of art. In Yugoslavia (doesn't exist any more as a country) during 80's DJs recognized this song as a huge hit and played song in clubs. Especially, I remember that every summer in Dubrovnik, discotheque Bahus, DJ played that song a few times per night. What a memories. Song of the era.

First time I saw this version of the video it was late one night/early morning in some nightclub in Perth, Western Australia. Back then I was pretty stunned. How far we have come since.

But the track is just complete awesomeness in sound. Peak 80's. So glad I've been able to see and hear this again... 10/10.
