Catch my disease
Ben Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My head is a box full of nothing
And that's the way I like it
My garden's a secret compartment
And that's the way I like it
And that's the way I like it
Your body's a dream that turns violent
And that's the way I like it
And that's the way I like it
The winter is long in the city
And that's the way I like it

So please
Baby please
Open your heart
Catch my disease

I was backstage in Pomona
And that's the way I like it
She drank beer with Coca-Cola
And that's the way I like it
And that's the way I like it
She told me about the winds from Santa Anna
And that's the way I like it
And that's the way I like it
She told me she loved me like fireworks
And that's the way I like it

So please
Baby please
Open your eyes
Catch my disease

So please (PLEASE!)
Baby please
Come on
Catch my disease
Catch it

They play good Charlotte on the radio
And that's the way I like it
They play sleepy Jackson on the radio
And that's the way I like it
And that's the way I like it
I hear Beyonce on the radio
And that's the way I like it
'Cause that's the way I like it
They don't play me on the radio
But that's the way I like it

So please
Baby please
Open your heart
And catch my disease
So please
Baby please
Come on
Catch my disease
(Catch my disease) nananana nananah
(Catch my disease) nananana nananah

(Catch my disease) nananana nananah
(Catch my disease) nananana nananah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Catch My Disease" by Ben Lee seems to revolve around a few themes: the first is the idea of nothingness or being empty-headed, however this is something the singer likes. The second theme is the idea of secrets, with the use of a garden as a metaphor for something that is private and hidden, and something the singer likes. The third theme is centered around the concept of love, with the singer hoping that the person they love will catch their 'disease'. The song starts off describing how the singer likes having an empty box for a head, something they like as it seems to allow them to deal with things in a way that works for them. The metaphorical garden here represents a secret - we all have our own secrets or things we hold onto privately, that is what the singer's garden is to them. They then speak about how the person they are in love with is someone who is a bit violent and fiery, but they still love them. Finally, the song ends with the singer appealing to this person to catch their disease, to fall in love with them, and to open up their heart to do so.

The song seems to be about being able to be yourself and having the person you love accept that about you. Ben Lee's "Catch My Disease" appears to be an anthem for individuality and asking the person you love to accept the parts of you that might be not-so-easy to understand but it's essential to you as a person. The song's bridge gives us a little insight into where Ben was when he wrote the song. Ben sings about being backstage in Pomona and how he had a conversation with a girl who he really liked. The deep conversation that he had with her seems to have spurred on the themes present in the song.

I remember downloading and listening to this on my purple iPod nano, on repeat, it was my favourite song. But being a kid, I didn't know anything about it; the song, the lyrics, the name of the song itself, or the artist. All I could remember was the video, like a cruel fever dream. One day, a few years ago, my brother mentioned remembering this song, and we eventually found it again. It was like being met with an old friend. I love this song so much, it brings back such a comforting nostalgia of my childhood.
