I was adopted by my father who was African American I was a Caucasian boy. In 1968 I head Ben E. King sing this song at a small club on the coast of SC. King had a small band of 3 or 4 guys and I can still remember the single violin. The venue was not air conditioned. I was 18. The girl I was with was 17. 52 years later we are still a couple. And I still love the song.

I bartended in a karaoke bar for 7 years, and my father would always come visit me at work, but always refused to sing. He was in his early 60s and it was a playful point of pride for him that he had never been dragged into taking part. One particularly bad night, after I had gone through the loss of my child, he took me to a local karaoke bar and we just drank all night and forgot our worries. Eventually, he got drunk enough he went up to sing and this was the song he chose. In all honesty, It was probably the worst singing I've ever heard, and still somehow the most beautiful at the same time. I know he did it just to put a smile on my face during a difficult time, and I don't think he ever truly knew just how much it really meant to me.

He passed suddenly less than a year later, and I sang this at his funeral. This song is one of those rare things that makes me simultaneously cry from missing him while smiling at what was such a priceless moment. A true testament to how the little things can often mean the most

This song played whilst playing final fantasy 15 with my best friend.
I'd just moved into my new place, was still waiting for my sofa to be delivered so we played it whilst we waited. My grandpa passed away in January this year. He was diagnosed with lung cancer a while back, since then his health just kept getting worse. I've been having this bad feeling in my head, so last winter I decided to just fly back and stay with him for some time. While I was there, I borrowed a vintage Japanese knock-off of a Gibson J45 from a friend. So every day I'd grab this guitar into his room, sit there on the bench by his bed and sing some songs to him, from the Beatles to Bob Marley, from Bruce Springsteen to the Grateful Dead...you name it. But out of all the songs I played, this one is his favorite. He loved it so much that even though he doesn't understand English in the slightest, he'd ask me to sing this again the day after, by humming out the chorus of it. About a month later, he passed. Now every time I heard this song somewhere, I'd think of him, think of those afternoons where he was in his bed, watching me playing that guitar with a smile on his face.

I grew up hearing this song with my grandparents. It meant a lot to the two of them, my granddad described it as the song he dedicated to my Grandmama. She passed very suddenly after a battle with lung cancer. He was never the same after that. He was always a great man in my eyes but he carried a great sadness with him for the rest of his life. He passed a couple years ago and this song still brings me to my knees sobbing. I have a great appreciation for how much love this song is able to convey. If I'm ever fortunate enough to find a partner in life this is the first song I want to play at the wedding. What an artist.

My wife stood by me when I had cancer. I must admit I fully expected to do it alone because every hard time before I had been on my own, married or not. I was surprised to say the least and eternally grateful. I was totally incapacitated after surgery for almost a month and the way insurance is 2 days in the hospital was too long. I NEEDED someone to stand by me. I suppose that is key in all this. I made it through all by myself, alone up to that point and when I needed the help it was there. When I was in my mid 20’s, I would blast this music on my stereo system. With my guitar in hand, I would pretend I was playing these songs live. After divorce, many struggles, and hard times, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I now play and record Christian music under the artist’s name “Su Rios.” My music is nowhere close to these songs, but I do have to say that music like this gave me the inspiration to make music. This music brings back so many fond memories, and difficult times, but I wouldn't trade them in for anything, because they made me who I am today.

About 4 weeks ago my grandad took a turn for the worst and passed away. His funeral has not happened due to the current situations with coronavirus, but one of the songs that we are playing at his funeral is this one. when we lose somebody we just gotta carry on. And i sometimes laugh to myself and think, i bet grandad is up there having a glass of whiskey and is smiling down at us. So this "was" my grandpas favorite song before he passed away from his 5 year battle with multiple types of cancer (spread and others developed) all over his body on April 12th, 2018. They played this at the end of his funeral and it hurt me so bad knowing this was his all time favorite song 💔 I'll never forget this song when I think of him. Please let your grandparents know you love them before it's too late 😫 💔 Just know if you are young and hear a grandparent of yours has been put on hospice, visit them because hospice is literally the end of that person's life and there's a 0.1% chance they'll live through it for over 3 months.
